10-30-2014 Atlanta Airport Ride News From the Airport Ride: Attention Atlanta Airport Peloton, Thanks to Charles Seward for bringing to our attention the partial closure of Buffington Road in Union City. I rode the course on Sunday and can confirm we will have to alter the route. There is a slight climb on Buffington up to the intersection with Flat Shoals Road. (There is a church on the right at the intersection). At the light we will make a left turn onto Flat Shoals and stay on this road briefly before making the first right turn onto Connell Road. This road contains several speed humps and stop signs on a slight downhill through a residential area. This entire detour is a neutral area. There are no attacks, no jockeying for position, etc. Connell eventually intersects with Bethesda onto which we will turn right. We will then take Bethesda to where it dead ends into Jonesboro Rd 138 and take a right. This is a busy road so make this turn with caution. From there we stay on Jonesboro until it intersects with Buffington (where the Dodge Jeep dealership will be on the left) and a left turn onto Buffington puts us back on course. This detour is the best of some not-so-great options but thanks in advance for keeping this portion of the ride neutral. Please spread the word to any riders not yet on the interwebs or The Facebook.

Airport Ride News The Airport Ride Speaketh! On Sunday, November 2nd 2014 at 2am EST, daylight savings time ends and clocks move back one hour. On Sunday, November 2nd 2014 at 10am EST, another immutable rite of fall occurs: the hallowed Atlanta Airport Ride commences its 784th season on Trinity Street in downtown Atlanta near the Castleberry Hill lofts.
For longtime Airport veterans, let’s build on the relatively safe season we had last year. For Airport rookies, this ride ain’t for beginners. There are long and short options (around mile 19 just after the train tracks) as well as myriad levels of skills and fitness on this ride. No shame in going short or orderly moving to the back if you can’t hang just yet. Enjoy the extra hour of sleep. You’re gonna need it. See ya in two weeks….(Trish’s Note: This is a race pace ride. Expect average speeds greater than 20 mph! There are no sag stops, this ride is for racers and experienced riders! This is not a ride if you have never ridden in a group before! They will call you out if you do something stupid. No one will hold your hand. You will get dropped!)

SRS Finale From a press release from SRS: Champions Crowned in September for 5-month, 5-state Southeast Regional Series
More than 450 men, women and juniors participated September 13-14 in Greenville, S.C. in 20 categorized races for the fifth and final weekend for the 2014 Southeast Regional Series presented by Stan’s NoTubes (SRS). Champions were crowned in the summer-long series that spanned five states in five months. A total of 26 SRS titles were awarded after the conclusion of the Subaru Road Race on Sunday. Greenville resident Ben Renkema of Stan’s NoTubes powered by Proferrin captured the Hincapie Overall Leaders title in the Men’s Pro 1/2 category. Daniel Zmolik (New York, N.Y.) was second in the season-long overall points competition, 70 points behind his teammate. Third overall was secured by Zach Kratche (Charleston, S.C.) of Ms. Roses p/b J.Brown-Champion System. “It’s really nice to finish in Greenville. My wife and I moved here from Michigan because it’s a cycling town,” said 2014 SRS Men’s Pro1/ 2 champion Renkema, who has led the Hincapie Overall points competition all year since finishing on the podium in the first two races of the year in Albany, Ga. “The Southeast Regional Series is a lot more laid back than other events, like the NCC or NRC series. The events are close enough to home that you can leave Friday after work to race. It’s really good competition all year, for pros and for beginners.”
In the Women’s Pro 1/2/3 category, Amy Floyd (Mobile, Ala.) of Empowerment: Women’s Elite Cycling took home the title as Hincapie Overall Leader and the pink jersey. She scored 94 more points over the five-week series than runner-up Susan Jones-Morgan (Simpsonville, S.C.) of Team Zoom. Grace Chappell (Chapel Hill, N.C.) of Happy Tooth Women’s Racing was third overall. “Albany was really fun, and all the races have been well organized. It has become a very positive experience for me. One thing they do very well is put the women’s (category) fours in their own race. It can be intimidating to start racing with all categories together,” said Floyd, who started racing seriously this winter at age 29 and moved from Cat 4 to Cat 1. She took over the overall lead for both the Hincapie Overall Points and PEZ Cycling News Sprint jerseys after Top 10 finishes at SRS events in both Albany, Ga. and Huntsville, Ala.

Silk Sheets Warning The weekend concert event “TomorrowWorld” will be at Chattahoochee Hills Farm (aka Chatt Hills if you are a horse person) at Silk Sheets at the corner of Cochran Mill Rd. & Cedar Grove Rd. Sept. 24-28. There will be thousands of cars on the roads near there. If you want to ride Silk Sheets, it may be better to find an alternative way to drive and park at Serenbe. If you park there, don’t forget that it’s private property. Patronize the shops or eat at the restaurants. I recommend the Gardenburger and a chocolate chip cookie from the Blue Eyed Daisy. Better yet, avoid the area and head to the Sosebee Bike Park or come race Georgia Cross in Conyers!

9-26-2014 Rosskopf Signs for BMC Atlantan Joey Rosskopf has signed with BMC Racing. Congratulations, Joey! Do us proud in Europe! I want to take advantage of all the support the BMC Racing Team offers to better myself as a rider. I also want to be there where they need me most. So I hope to play a productive role on the team.”

How many Georgians have signed with World Tour Teams in the last 10-15 years? Saul Raisin (Dalton) was with Credit Agricole. Current National Criterium Champion John Murphy (Athens/United Healthecare) was with BMC for a few years. Anyone else?

Marietta Crit Finished for Season From Gary Daniels: “To be clear (and respectively “official”) Tuesday night training at West Oak Business Park is over for 2014. Once again thank you to all who participated! A big thanks to Marietta Police and the City of Marietta for their support. Thanks to Kelli Rivera for her help with registration. Thanks to my sister for filling in, and to my grandson Jackson for helping count five-to-go and ringing the awesome cowbell presented to me as a commemorative trophy by the peloton. Thanks to the kind folks who work there for their patience. Now I am going to tell you that the park has open public roads and is lit at night. Feel free to train there anytime; just acknowledge that without the officer present you are on your own for running the stop sign or a run-in with our 1%’r nemesis. All that being said hope to see all of you (and more…) with tons of base miles swelling in your capillaries as we try to up the pace and produce some of the nations fastest bike racers. Best to all! Coach Gary Daniels”

Spread the word to your customers and members. it would be great to see a large group of mountain bikers show up for this.   If you love to ride at Jake and Bull Mtn, please join SORBA and CTHA on Sept 27th National Public Lands Day.  Everyone is welcome (you don’t have to be a member of SORBA).  Everyone works to their own ability.   We will be building 2 turnpikes on 223H – the Jake Mtn. trail, on the flat ground near Jones Creek.  These turnpikes will replace the muddy areas.   Back Country Horseman Dewey Campbell and USFS Taylor Hamilton will be using Dewey’s pack stock to haul the materials needed for the turnpikes.  They’ll do this prior to the workday so that everything is already there on site for us.

If you would like to bring your bike to ride to the work site, that will be fine. We may have a bike cart or two to carry tools down.  If you have your own bike cart and would consider bringing it to carry more tools down, that would be great – please let Debbie Crowe (georgiacrowes22 at bellsouth.net) know. You’ll need a method to carry your lunch, enough water, and possibly a tool.   CTHA will  provide lunch for those who RSVP.  We’ll be having sack lunches this time since we’ll need to take them with us.  So it’s important for you to please RSVP to Ms. Crowe.
