Georgia Cyclocross News

The Georgia State Cyclocross Championships will be at Elks Aidmore on Nov. 9. Country Cross, the first race, is this coming Sunday in Gay, GA at Tower Brewing. If you haven’t seen the course video on GACX social media, it looks so cool! Flat but cool—barns, stairs, maybe a bar (for those over 21).  https://www.georgia-cx.com

TBRA Defunct
It’s only taken me more than a year, but I’ve finally been able to confirm that TBRA-the TN Bicycle Racing Association-is defunct. The website has not been kept up, and there are not that many race in Tennessee these days. I’ve been pulling them from USAC’s event search and a couple of single-event/promoter sites that I know of.  I’ve heard the same of the Carolinas Cycling Association although there does appear to be very limited activity on their Facebook site It seems like USAC has been letting their local associations die out. GBRA is still very much around for Georgia. They keep up with the state championships, the state champ jerseys and medals, and such.

News for 9-21-2025
I’ve been asked recently why I do not list races like NICA, Georgia Cycling, and Collegiate (USAC) racing on the calendars. These have very limited audiences and are not open to everyone. If your high schooler or middle schooler is on a GC team, you know when the races are. Same with collegiate–you know or your coach tells you. I only list races that are open to the “public.” By design, NICA, GC, and USAC Collegiate races have restricted entries. Yes, some races listed are age specific like the “NC Senior Games” and such–but anyone from any state that is the right age can race. Not the same as with the others I mentioned. So, that’s why you won’t see restricted registration races on Southeastern Cycling. For example you have a 16 year old high school Junior that wants to register for a Georgia Cycling race, but they arent’ on a GC team. They can’t register even if they are the right age. They have to join a team. If you do have a MS or HS student that wants to race mountain bikes, please contact GC or NICA to find the team nearest to you.

I have no words. I am so sad you are gone, Ken. You were loved by your family and so many in your extended bike family. Everyone is welcome on Sunday, Oct. 12.

Alexis Magner Signs with EF Education-Oatly

Press Release (Trish’s Note: Alexis is a long time pro roadie from Georgia and sometimes racer at the Georgia Cyclocross Series. PR is edited for length.)

We are proud to announce that veteran American road racer Alexis Magner will join EF Education-Oatly next season. Alexis has over a decade of professional racing to her name. A classics specialist, she won Drentse Acht van Westerveld and has reached the podium at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Dwars door Vlaanderen, and Ronde van Drenthe.

For Alexis, deciding to sign with EF Education-Oatly had a lot to do with the existing roster and the team’s supportive environment. “I’ve been following the team and there’s some generational talent on the squad. It’s very inspiring. I can’t wait to race alongside Cédrine and Noemi. I have personal ambitions but I really want to be part of a team that lifts each other up and supports each other and helps each other reach their goals. I really want to help these girls reach their goals because they’re super talented. It’s been pretty cool to watch. I can’t wait to be there, dying a thousand deaths for my new teammates,” she laughed.

The American’s 2025 season was cut short by a crash last month at the Baloise Ladies Tour where she sustained multiple fractures and a collapsed lung. Fortunately, Alexis is healing well and, despite the severity of her injuries, her enthusiasm for racing hasn’t wavered.  “All my fractures are healing pretty well and my mobility is getting a lot better,” Alexis said. “I collapsed my lung. It was really bad. The day that I was discharged from the hospital was the day that I signed my contract with EF Education-Oatly. That was a wild experience. Mentally, I needed it at the moment. It was like, ‘I have to get better because I have this thing to look forward to.’ “

Alexis is well aware that just because she’s returning to Europe, it doesn’t mean that she will rest on her laurels. “It’s not lost on me that it’s going to be a very hard road to be at the pointy end of the race and competitive at the WorldTour level. I know it’s going to take some time but just having the opportunity to be there, giving my best in every race, and being a super supportive teammate to all these talented riders on the squad is incredibly exciting,” she said.

Of course, Alexis has her eye on a win in 2026, but that’s not her only goal. “Obviously, you never know how you’re going to feel when you’re out there but if I am in a race and I’m on a day, I would love to have the opportunity to get a result,” Alexis said. “For me though, the biggest thing is building relationships with my teammates, earning their trust, and showing them that they can rely on me to get the job done because in the long term, you can’t win without a team. You can’t be part of a team unless your teammates trust you. That’s my biggest goal for next year.”

Along the way, you’ll find fully stocked pit stops filled with snacks, hydration, and encouragement to keep you going strong. You’ll have the support of volunteers and fellow riders who know exactly what it means to dig in and keep pedaling when the miles get tough. And when the ride is done? That’s when the celebration begins! At the finish, expect music, laughter, good food, and plenty of stories as riders gather to celebrate their achievements. Whether you rode 41 or 100 miles, every pedal stroke matters, because together we’re riding for a cause.

The Van Purser Foundation exists to serve cyclists and their families in times of need. By riding, you’re not just enjoying an incredible day on two wheels—you’re helping provide support, encouragement, and hope to those when they need it most. That’s what makes this ride truly unforgettable.

So here’s the question: Are You In? We don’t want you to miss out on the chance to be part of this incredible experience. Gather your friends, sign up, and get ready to join hundreds of riders who will come together for community, for purpose, and for one another. Advocacy Win! GDOT Awards Zero-Percent Local Match Grants to Small Georgia Communities
We’re excited to share that the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has begun to award Transportation Alternatives (TA) grants with no required local match for communities with populations of 5,000 or below. This is a perfect opportunity to make walking, biking, and rolling safer and more accessible in rural communities across Georgia.

This development is the direct result of Go Georgia’s advocacy and collaborative efforts with partners such as the national Safe Routes Partnership and the League of American Bicyclists. Together, we have worked to alleviate the financial barriers preventing communities from developing safe active transportation infrastructure. This change didn’t come about overnight; it required consistent advocacy over the course of two years. The logistics of eliminating local match requirements for small communities were far from obvious and we applaud GDOT for successfully identifying and dedicating state funding. “Beginning in 2025, GDOT and the State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA) partnered to offer TA match assistance on qualifying projects using funds from the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank (GTIB). GDOT also identified additional state funds to go towards TA matches. These new funding sources allowed us to begin over 15 new pedestrian and bicycle improvement projects in rural areas that otherwise would not have had the means to cover the required 20% match.” — Ben Kane, GDOT Planning Programs Administrator

Project Highlight: Firefly Trail
Thanks to two awards from Transportation Alternatives in 2025, segments of the popular Firefly Trail in Northeast Georgia are moving forward with zero-percent local match. In unincorporated Oglethorpe County, this will include preliminary engineering (PE), right-of-way (ROW) acquisition, and construction for a 4.5-mile segment of the Firefly Trail between the southern Maxeys city limits and the Greene County line. Meanwhile, in Union Point, TA will fund PE, ROW, and construction for a key 0.3-mile segment along Carlton Street, extending the existing trail fully into downtown Union Point. These segments will connect more communities to one another, offering safer recreational and transportation opportunities for nearby residents. “Completing the final piece of the Firefly Trail into downtown Union Point is critical to the entire 39-mile project, because Union Point is where the Athens Branch of the Georgia Railroad started. When finished, it will be a significant boost to our local economy. We are overwhelmed at receiving the Transportation Alternative Program award and greatly appreciate GDOT’s Trust Fund, which will cover the twenty percent local match that would be beyond our means.” — Mayor Lanier Rhodes, Union Point

Passing of a Pillar of the Community
By now many have heard that Ken Rosskopf passed away late Friday. Ken was a pillar of the Atlanta cycling community. He helped to found Bikelaw Georgia. His son, Joey, was a World Tour Rider for many years (now retired from racing). Ken raced, he commuted, and he loved all things bicycle and motorcycle.  I was and am happy to call Ken a friend. He was a tireless advocate for cycling in Atlanta. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts.

Bikelaw Georgia’s website says this of Ken: “Ken the bicycle law authority: Ken literally wrote the book on bicycling law in Atlanta and Georgia. He says, “I wrote Representing Injured Bicyclists for the Georgia Trial Lawyer and contributed to The Georgia Law Enforcement Pocket Guide and Georgia Bike Sense. I’m a frequent lecturer about laws and safety to bicycle groups. I co-founded a national association of bicycle lawyers and bicycle accident reconstruction engineers.”

Decaturish has an article on Ken’s passing.

Allatoona Creek Park Deer Hunting Season

From Allatoona Creek Park
It’s that time of year again when certain parts of the park close for deer hunting. This year’s bow hunting season will be September 13 – January 31. During this time only permitted hunters are allowed in the shaded dark blue areas. There will be signage indicating the restricted hunting areas and anyone found crossing the boundaries without a permit will be ticketed. Remember, the hunting program is a very important part of keeping a healthy and balanced ecosystem at the park and we wish our permitted hunters and their families a bountiful season.

Trish’s Note: Sadly, my favorite trails are closed at Toona during this time, but please respect the boundaries. The county will ticket you if you are found riding outside the open trails. Also, wear a bright jersey since there is hunting around the trails but not ON the trails.
