5-22-2013 Reality Bikes Ride From Reality Bikes regarding their Wed. Ride: Very Important! Wednesday ride announcement:

It is very important that all ride groups ride 2 abreast from the shop and through town. CPD has made it clear to us that they intend to start writing tickets to violators of the 2 abreast law. We also want to remind you to please be respectful during any interaction with our local law enforcement. We need to work with them and not against them so being polite and cooperative is important. If there are any issues with regard to a complaint please deal with it after the fact and not while representing the cycling community on the road. Please do not be shy about reminding your fellow cyclists on the ride about this request. Failing to ride 2 abreast through town may result in the group being pulled over by police, disrupting everyone’s ride. The ride is always neutral until we cross over Spot Rd anyway so lets all agree to keep things organized and get everyone safely through the light at Spot Rd before officially starting the ride.

5-19-2013 Healthy Newton Omnium From Jim Behning, the promoter: Third Annual Healthy Newton Omnium June 8 and 9, 2013 to benefit Newton Trails

The 2013 edition of the Healthy Newton Omnium is ready for you! Newton County is less than 30 miles east of Atlanta. The volunteers of Healthy Newton are generally from Rockdale, Newton, Morgan and Walton counties. We put on races and benefit rides in our counties showcasing the great low traffic riding we love. You can see 200 year old mansions in town or 200 hundred year old farm houses out where we ride and race. Goals for this race are to raise money for our Newton Trails efforts and safe road markings. This year we have two sponsoring USAC clubs. Ctown Racing which has helped the first two years and Grindstone Racing. Volunteers from the two sponsoring clubs and help from Newton Trails, Covington Conyers Cycling Club aka C4 and the Conyers-Rockdale Bike & Trail Coalition will be in various positions. The race is quite junior friendly where a junior can choose to race the junior classes which are generally shorter than the open classes but on the same roads. It is also masters Cat 4-5 friendly. The masters Cat 1-3 have their own races.

Course description: All races are in Newton County just a few miles east of Atlanta south of I-20. The Saturday morning time trial is a rolling course on the east side of the county just east of Highway 11 south of I-20. You are in the Brick Store voting district. Less than a mile northeast of the TT start is the old historic stagecoach brick store off 278. We start at Crossroads Baptist and ride towards Newborn past some subdivisions and row crop farms. The junior course is 7.5 miles out and back. The adult course is about 14.2 miles out and back. The start is a gentle downhill and rolls up and down until you turn back. That last kilometer is all uphill and is payback for that fast start you enjoyed.

If you take the scenic route to the crit course you could drive past some mansions on Floyd Street near Downtown Covington with the historic courthouse in the square. Lots of good eateries around the square. The Saturday afternoon crit course is ten minutes west of the square. Located on the west edge of Newton County just south of I-20 in a subdivision with no houses. No traffic and good pavement. A unique course about a kilometer in length. How many crits have you done with one turn? That left turn is after a gentle climb past the finish line.

The Sunday road race is back over towards the east side of the county in Downtown Newborn off Highway 142. About 28 miles long. Lots of gentle rollers, false flats, turns and a few punchy short steep climbs. Newton County Deputies at all major turns or road crossings. Junior course is a shorter version with the same start and finish. Downtown Newborn has at least one eatery open and possibly two if a remodeling project gets done in time for the race.

Omnium info: You have to do all three races to be in contention. We pay three deep for the money classes. Prizes or medals for the prizes and medals classes. Scoring: elapsed time for all three events.
We will try to avoid any combining of classes. Last year we had a good turnout so there was never a concern about combined classes. Minimum class size of 5. No mixing of women’s and men’s classes. Note that the USA Cycling rules say the Cat 5 race has a limit of 50 riders. Preregistration is a big help. Avoid the day of registration fee. Online registration ends 10:01 PM EDT June 6, 2013. $5 late fee per on site reg.

5-18-2013 More International Wins Saturday Joey Rosskopf (Hincapie Development Team) of Decatur won the first stage of the Paris Arras race in France. Congratulations, Joey!

5-16-2013 Coldwater Mountain Trail The last week has been spent updating Southeastern Cycling, dealing with a bunch of stuff in my personal life, and getting ready to start a new job next week. I decided to take a day off and go mountain bike somewhere I’d never been before. Since I may want to do a race out there later this summer, I chose Coldwater Mountain in Anniston, AL. The trail system is slated to have 60 miles once completed. Right now there are about 15 miles of trails including a 9 mile Advanced loop called Bomb Dog. The first part of the trail is typical machine cut singletrack on the Mama Bear and Papa Bear trails. About 2/3 of the way up the climb to Bomb Dog, the trail yields to one of the rockiest trails I have ridden including Snake Creek Gap. Some of the rock garden make the Snake look tame. The climbing on the loop can be relentless, but none of it is really bad. There are only a couple of steep sections. The 3 mile downhill is the highlight of the trail. I was expecting it to be really fast, but it wasn’t. There are more rock gardens, some table top-like jumps, and several other obstacles. It was fun but challenging. The Bomb Dog loop ends with a 1.2 mile climb to the parking lot. There are porta-potties in the parking area, but there is no water at the trailhead.
