Dunwoody Vulnerable Users Law Passed “A new ordinance that adds protections for cyclists and pedestrians beyond what state law requires is now official in Dunwoody. The City Council approved the “vulnerable road user” ordinance at its Nov. 18 meeting and is believed to be the first city in Georgia to have such a law…… The city’s ordinance mirrors much state law, such as ticketing a motorist for not stopping for pedestrians in a crosswalk. It prohibits motorists from throwing objects at cyclists, driving too close to try to intimidate them, and turning right in front of them.” Read the full article at the Reporter Newpapers.

10-8-2019 Silver Comet Extension from the Marietta Daily Journal: “Work is set to begin Nov. 1 to connect the Silver Comet Trail with the Atlanta BeltLine, a distance of 10.6 miles at a cost of more than $18 million. When it’s done, visitors will be able to start from the Chief Ladiga Trail in northeast Alabama and walk or bike all the way to the Silver Comet’s trail head at the Georgia state line, down past the current end of the trail near Nickajack Elementary in Smyrna and on to Atlanta, all without ever leaving a paved surface.

“When we’re done, we think we’ll be the longest paved trail in the U.S.,” said Ed McBrayer, executive director of the PATH Foundation, a nonprofit with the goal of building a network of trails in Georgia. “The Silver Comet coupled with the trail in Alabama is about 93.5 miles, and we’ll be adding about 11 miles to that.” McBrayer said the goal is to finish that work by the fall of 2022. The extension will go from Plant Atkinson Road near the current end of the trail to Atlanta Road and on to the Chattahoochee River. On the Atlanta side, the trail will connect hikers and bikers to the BeltLine and Centennial Olympic Park.”

Funding for the Silver Comet This is great news for finishing the Silver Comet after nearly 20 years! Form Curbed Atlanta: “The PATH Foundation has operated in metro Atlanta for about 27 years, completing more than 280 miles of trails (along with some 80 bridges) to boost recreational and commuting options and position Atlanta as a leader, officials say, among America’s bike-trail cities. But to reach a goal of finishing 300 miles of trails by PATH’s 30th anniversary in 2021, the nonprofit needed help. That’s come by way of PATH’s largest private donor since its inception, the James M. Cox Foundation, which announced today a $6 million grant that will go toward the “Mile 300” campaign.

A main focus of the campaign is to link the Silver Comet Trail—one of PATH’s most used and well-known greenways—directly to downtown Atlanta and its growing system of paths and protected bike lanes. An extension of the Silver Comet into the city, officials say, would also be a crucial link from downtown to Beltline segments on the Westside and the future Westside Park at Bellwood Quarry.” Read the full article.

9-26-2019 Cheaha Challenge TT News From the Cheaha Challenge: It’s YOU against the clock! Join us for the 2nd Annual Cheaha Challenge Time Trial on Saturday, May 16, held in conjunction with the weekend events of the 28th Annual Cheaha Challenge Gran Fondo Century & ULTRA on Sunday, May 17. Experience the thrill of exiting a time trial podium down a ramp onto a closed 12-mile straight shot course (only three turns, all near the finish), and test what you’re made of as you barrel along the flat, fast, fun path. Our TT is a qualifier for the UCI World Time Trial Championship to be held in conjunction with the UCI Gran Fondo World Championship in September in Vancouver, Canada. However, our TT has multiple another option besides just the UCI qualifier – if you’re a resident of Alabama or Georgia, you can race for the AL/GA TT State Championsihp (Age group, Junior Division, or Handcyle). Age groups are determined by racer’s age on 12/31/20. UCI World Time Trial Championship qualifier – Finish top three of your age group or in the top 20%, and you’re going to Canada to race in September! (Note: UCI recognizes only age groups of 19 years old and above.)

Alabama & Georgia State TT Championships – If you’re a resident of either state, you can race to place in your respective state’s championship. Age Groups include ages 9 and up. Junior Divisions are ages 9-14 and ages 15-18. Junior Division fees are ½ the adult division fees. Besides Age Groups, we have two other AL/GA TT Championship Categories: 1. Eddy Merckx Division – Don’t have a TT bike or all the gear? No problem, this TT Division is for you. Merckx racers must be 19 or older, and will not qualify for the UCI World TT Championship but will be counted as AL/GA State Champions. In order to race as “Merckx” you may not use any of the following (even one will switch you to “Aero”): disc wheels, wheels deeper than 50MM, aero helmets, shoe covers, aero bars. Allowed items are: Aero road helmet (no teardrop shape, ears cannot be covered) and skinsuits. 2. Handcycle Division – H1-H5 Male & Female scored separately.
