Passing of a Pillar of the Community
By now many have heard that Ken Rosskopf passed away late Friday. Ken was a pillar of the Atlanta cycling community. He helped to found Bikelaw Georgia. His son, Joey, was a World Tour Rider for many years (now retired from racing). Ken raced, he commuted, and he loved all things bicycle and motorcycle.  I was and am happy to call Ken a friend. He was a tireless advocate for cycling in Atlanta. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts.

Bikelaw Georgia’s website says this of Ken: “Ken the bicycle law authority: Ken literally wrote the book on bicycling law in Atlanta and Georgia. He says, “I wrote Representing Injured Bicyclists for the Georgia Trial Lawyer and contributed to The Georgia Law Enforcement Pocket Guide and Georgia Bike Sense. I’m a frequent lecturer about laws and safety to bicycle groups. I co-founded a national association of bicycle lawyers and bicycle accident reconstruction engineers.”

Decaturish has an article on Ken’s passing.

Allatoona Creek Park Deer Hunting Season

From Allatoona Creek Park
It’s that time of year again when certain parts of the park close for deer hunting. This year’s bow hunting season will be September 13 – January 31. During this time only permitted hunters are allowed in the shaded dark blue areas. There will be signage indicating the restricted hunting areas and anyone found crossing the boundaries without a permit will be ticketed. Remember, the hunting program is a very important part of keeping a healthy and balanced ecosystem at the park and we wish our permitted hunters and their families a bountiful season.

Trish’s Note: Sadly, my favorite trails are closed at Toona during this time, but please respect the boundaries. The county will ticket you if you are found riding outside the open trails. Also, wear a bright jersey since there is hunting around the trails but not ON the trails.

Bear 6/3 Hour MTB Race Postponed

We apologize for this inconvenience, but we have yet to figure out how to control weather. We are having Kent AMB Weather do more research on figuring that out.

All registrations will automatically roll over to the new date. (Trish’s Note: They said registration will reopen in a few days, so you can still register online!)

Changes Coming to Kennesaw Mountain

The Marietta Daily Journal reports that changes are coming to Kennesaw Mountain in October that will affect cyclists.

“For those who enjoy hiking up the park’s main road to the top of Kennesaw Mountain, hikers will soon have a lot more room to work with.

Gamman said starting in October, all cars will be forbidden from driving on the road to the top of the mountain, and the road will only be open to hikers and cyclists.

The only motor vehicle allowed on the road will be the park’s shuttle service, which will also be upgrading from one shuttle to two, and soon begin running seven days a week.

Park visitors will have the choice to either walk to the mountain peak, take a bicycle or ride in one of the shuttles to the top. To keep pedestrians and vehicles separated on the mountain, the inside lane of the road will be reserved for the shuttles in the middle of the day, as well as cyclists in the mornings and afternoon. The outside lane will be reserved for pedestrians, joggers and hikers.”

The MDJ also reported “At the same time, bicycle-riding on the mountain will also get an upgrade from five to seven days a week in the mornings and late afternoon.”

Trish’s Note: Gamman is Park Superintendent Patrick Gamman.

From the Van Purser Foundation
Summer is in full spin, and we’re shifting into high gear with a ride-and-watch party you won’t want to miss. On Saturday, July 19, we’re bringing the cycling community together for a morning on the bike followed by a mid-summer bash at Whitetail Bicycles as we watch Stage 14 of the Tour de France. Whether you’re in race mode or just along for the ride (and the post-ride pizza), this is the perfect way to celebrate the world’s biggest bike race—together.

We’ll roll out from Milton City Hall, 2006 Heritage Walk, with two route options to suit your pace and mileage goals. The longer route covers 62 miles with two pace groups to choose from—19/20 mph or 21/22 mph—and heads out at 8:00 a.m. The shorter route offers a steady 39 miles at a 17+ mph pace, no drop with SAG support, rolling at 8:30 a.m. No matter which route you choose, you’ll be back just in time to refuel and kick back as we stream the Tour, cheer on the pros, and enjoy cold drinks, good company, and some serious snacks.

Speaking of serious—our raffle game is strong. If you’re already registered for the AFO 100, you’re automatically entered into our exclusive Watch Party prize raffle. Haven’t signed up yet? No problem—just register by July 19 to get in on the action. We’ve got fantastic prizes you’ll actually want to take home. So, get yourself signed up, show up, and roll away with more than just a great ride and a few slices of pizza. Register here.

Do the Double
Feeling strong? Hungry for more? This fall, take your cycling weekend to the next level with the “Do the Double” Challenge—a back-to-back test of grit, endurance, and community spirit. It all starts on Saturday, October 4, when you’ll ride the AFO 100 to support the Van Purser Foundation, which helps cyclists and their families in times of unexpected need. Scenic routes, great rest stops, and an unbeatable finish-line celebration.

Then, if you’re up for the challenge, come back the next morning—Sunday, October 5—and saddle up again for Spin for Kids, a fun and meaningful ride that supports Camp Twin Lakes, giving kids with serious illnesses life-changing camp experiences. With multiple route options, beautiful scenery, and a powerful purpose, it’s the perfect way to cap off your weekend on the bike.

The course covers all the trails at Rope Mill Park! Solo, 2 and 3 person beginner/family team categories are available in the duathlon. We will be using traditional mountain bike race categories, as we have done in the past, to help alleviate congestion on the opening bike loop. The run is short enough that those who do not typically run still have plenty of time to start training! Prizes and awards presented to the top 3 in each duathlon category. Post race snacks and drinks available. We are also offering a separate 3.3 mile trail run on the Explorer Trails at this event for those who would prefer to just participate in a trail run.

FOOL’S GOLD 38 AND 54 MILE BIKE RACES – SEPTEMBER 13, 2025 The 2025 Maxxis Tires Fool’s Gold Bike Races will be held at the beautiful Montaluce Winery in Dahlonega, GA! The Fool’s Gold Mountain Bike Races will offer riders a 38 mile or 54 mile course. Free primitive camping is available at Montaluce Winery for Friday and Saturday nights. It helps us plan for the event immensely if you sign up early, so we are offering BLOCK PRICING FOR 2025. After the first 200 register, the price goes up $10 for each additional 100 riders. Both courses begin at Montaluce Winery and will have approximately 3 miles on pavement, then transition to gravel roads.

The 54 mile course begins with a stout 3 mile gravel road climb. The long course will remain on the ridgeline gravel road for 6 miles all the way to Winding Stair Gap and Aid 1. A fast gravel descent then takes riders onto the singletrack of the Turner Creek Trail. From here, riders will descend back to FS 28-1, and join the 38 mile course for the remainder of the race, which includes the Jones Creek Dam Trail, Bull Mountain Trail and Loop, Jake Mountain Trail and Black Branch Trail. The 38 mile course heads directly to the Jones Creek Dam Trail along gravel roads, giving riders the opportunity to space out. Essentially, the shorter course just cuts off the first section of gravel road climbing and ridge riding, and heads directly to the singletrack loop.

Saluda Grade Trail Purchased

From Conserving Carolina
It’s official! The Saluda Grade Trail coalition has purchased the Saluda Grade Railroad. Our vision is to create a new 31.5-mile rail trail that runs from Upstate SC into the mountains of Western NC, passing through charming small towns along the way. And now we have the land! There is still a lot of work ahead. We’ll need to work with our communities on design and planning so we can create the best version of the Saluda Grade Trail. And we will need to raise millions of dollars for construction, before we can start building. But this is a huge milestone and a day to celebrate! A huge thank you to the funders who made it possible! Funding came from the states of North and South Carolina, the South Carolina Conservation Bank, the federal Appalachian Regional Initiative for Stronger Economies (ARISE), the Polk County Community Foundation, and private donors.

North Carolina Grand Prix 20th Anniversary

From North Carolina Cyclocross
The NCGP is one of the longest-running UCI CX races in the country, and celebrating 20 years of the NCGP needed a special marker! We reached out to Chloë Holzapfel who has designed our “megaphone” t-shirt and last year’s NCGP posters! She cleverly integrated years’ worth of courses into the background to highlight 20 years running of the UCI C2 race. We can’t wait to celebrate this milestone with racers new and old this season! Join us in Hendersonville on November 22-23 and be a part of our party!
