National Cycling League Races Announced

“Organisers of the newly-launched National Cycling League (NCL) disclosed the calendar dates of their four-city criterium racing series, opening at Miami Beach, Florida on Saturday, April 8. Atlanta, Georgia will host the second stop in its downtown corridor on May 14, with the final two stops in late summer, August 13 in Denver, Colorado and September 10 in Washington, D.C.
A field of 10 invitation-only teams, each with six men and six women, are expected to compete across the series to determine the winner of the 2023 NCL Cup in September, where a $1 million prize purse will be divided among the top five teams. Two teams, both owned by the NCL, have been confirmed for the series – Miami Nights and Denver Disruptors. Eight additional teams are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.”

Quarry’s Edge Park Trails Closed

Our hearts go out to the good people of Griffin (GA) who took the brunt of the F3 tornado that touched down last Thursday afternoon. Also cannot say enough about the good volunteers at Quarry’s Edge who just two weeks ago won Volunteers of the Year for their work at Quarry’s Edge from the Georgia Parks and Recreation Association. Their work has been destroyed and despite this their spirits are high and hopeful about the park. @mtbatlprotrails was mobilizing to work at the park for Phase One implementation of the $1 million Chestnut Family Foundation award (and was to start work today) but needless to say we will have to regroup with the County due to the scope of the devastation and safety concerns.

If you’re new to the sport, a DIY bike mechanic or just looking to grab some new gear at great prices, this event is for you! Highlights will include high quality new and used kits, shoes, helmets, bike racks for vehicles, trainers, travel cases, and every type of part you can imagine. Bearings will also have a great selection of bikes available for sale, in a full range of styles and sizes.

We will be doing finishing work on the brand new “field connector trail, ” part of the Southside Improvement Project brought to you by Fox Trail Trust, the Georgia Cycling Association, Bearings Bike Works and the Arthur M. Maxxis Tires Southern Cross Bike Race

Coming March 4, 2023 – Registration is open! Ride into the New Year by registering for the 2023 Maxxis Tires Southern Cross Bike Race! The course is 50 miles with a bit over 6,000 ft of elevation gain (two major climbs), and consists of pavement, gravel roads and a short (but hard) grass section at the end of the race up to the finish line. The course is gravel bike or mountain bike friendly, so pick your poison! Riders will pass by an aid station twice during the ride, and be treated to Terrapin Beer and Moe’s Burritos for a hearty post-race meal.
2023 Registration opens at 8 pm on December 31st! Register early – this race sold out by January 15th in 2022.
We have a shorter 30 mile option for Junior riders with categories for 10-14 and 15-18 male and female riders. 30 mile Juniors will ride the infamous “Winding Stair Loop” and are allowed to have a non-participant adult accompany them for safety, but are not allowed to draft or have the adult carry any of their food or water.

Lake Russell Work Day

We will be working on a new reroute on the Sourwood Trail from Nancytown Road down to the new bridge just completed by the Forest Service. The reroute will improve the trail sustainability and should create an improved user experience. We will be scheduling more work days for the winter/spring to continue working on this reroute of the Sourwood Trail. Hopefully one or two of these dates will fit your schedule. I also know we will probably lose a couple of dates to the weather. My hope is that everyone that sees this could come to at least one work day. If that happens, we can accomplish a lot. Please share this with your friends and other Lake Russell Trail users. All tools will be provided. We will be providing lunch at this work day, so let me know if you are coming.
