Chattahoochee Hills Group Ride Problems Please read if you ride in Chatt Hills-gravel or road!

Dear cyclists who ride in Chattahoochee Hills.
Just keeping you up to speed to some grumblings happening down here. If you ride here, chances are you know how great it is and more and more of you are realizing how great it is.
However, that means the locals are getting a little rowdy with said volume of cyclists. Can I please ask a few things that keep coming up. Not all, but some that are very vocal.
- If you’re in a group, please get your group to ride two abreast when possible. Just try it. That’s the law and if we’re following the law, then those who want to complain have nothing to complain about. (I understand that they’re probably not following the law when they pass)
Most roads are not very congested but there are some – Hutcheson Ferry, Tommy Lee Cook, Roscoe Rd (South of Roscoe) that can be a little busy. Let’s try to be on our best behaviour on these roads. - If you’re riding with a buddy or two, please be courteous to the traffic behind you. Please move to single file if you can and when safe, or at least get close to each other. And for some of you maybe start practicing riding closer together. I come across a good number of riders with one on the shoulder and one hugging the yellow line. Yes, technically that is two abreast, but it’s also kind of a dick move.
- Please only ride on public roads. Venturing off into someones private drive or property is a recipe for disaster and gets the dander up on even the most tolerant local. (Trust me I live on one of these private drives and I hear about it a good bit)
- Gravel: just be aware that if you are taking up the road on a bend, a car coming around that bend is not anticipating you.
5.— just added — please be more cautious at stop signs. This is the second biggest complaint. Just because you got through the stop sign before the car did, does not mean your buddies did as well and most likely you just made an enemy from said motorist who uses “they don’t stop at stop signs” as their excuse to get everyone else all worked up.

Sope Creek Trail Day

Sope Creek Trail Day, 150 Columns Drive, Marietta, GA, Sat., July 16 9am-Noon Join us, the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and the Chattahoochee National Parks Conservancy for our monthly volunteer trail day at Sope Creek. Meet at the Columns Drive parking lot at 8:45. Have a mask, gloves, wear long pants and closed toed shoes and bring a pack, water, snacks, bug spray and your epi pen if you are allergic to bees. Tools and stoke provided!
Allatoona Trail Day

Allatoona Trail Work Party– Allatoona Creek Park 5690 Old Stilesboro Rd NW, Acworth, GA 30101, Sat. July 16 9 am-Noon. Join us every 3rd Saturday for our monthly work party at Allatoona Creek Park. Each month we get together to give back to the trails at Allatoona Creek Park by hosting a work party to perform trail maintenance work to keep the trails at the park in top shape! Meet at the main parking lot at Stilesboro Rd. and be ready to go at 9. Wear long pants, closed toed shoes, bring gloves, a pack, water and snacks and your epi pen if you are allergic to bees. AV200 Weekly Rides

The AV200.org is restarting weekly the rides for the rest of the summer. All are welcome. These are social rides and participation in the AV200 is not necessary. The AV200 just sponsors and staffs the rides. These are no drop/regroup rides so are great if you are a new rider. Only road bikes please. All rides will have a dinner meet up social after. Thursday’s Av200 Intown Ride—6:30pm approx 19 miles starting and ending at Carter Center with dinner after at Pure Taqueria or Victory Sandwich Bar (alternating weeks). Sunday Av200 City Ride—8:30am approx 34 miles starting and ending at Farm Burger Virginia Highlands with Brunch/lunch after at Farm Burger and a rest stop at Chastain Park. Rides start July 28. Fire Mountain Trails Set for Expansion

Five years after the completion of the original Fire Mountain biking trail system, EBCI (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians) Operations and EBCI Project Management have started work to more than double the trail network on the Qualla Boundary. The project is slated for a 2-million-dollar investment that will see 12 to 15 miles of new trails and much more.

Although it is not attached to Fire Mountain, it will be along the same lines. Mountain bike trails, a state-of-the-art asphalt pump track, a top track, a skills park, and a bicycle playground. We’re trying to lower the entry point,” said Jeremy Hyatt, Secretary of EBCI Operations. These fundraiser events feature a movie dedicated to the hard work volunteers put into their trail systems and highlights the challenges they face. MTB Atlanta and City of Smyrna Enter into MOU for North Cooper Lake Bike Park

MTB Atlanta and Recreate Smyrna have been actively working together since the initial planning of the North Cooper Lake Bike Park project. MTB Atlanta wrote a letter of recommendation to support the Recreational Trails Program Grant application written for the project and in 2017 City of Smyrna was awarded the RTP grant to fully fund construction of the Bike Park and trails at the park. During construction MTB Atlanta volunteers aided in construction by doing finishing work and corridor clearing. Since the opening of the park, MTB Atlanta has worked with Recreate Smyrna to run volunteer events for trail maintenance and park clean ups as well as conduct Sustainable Trails Workshops to train volunteers on best practices of sustainable trail design and maintenance at no cost to the City. The City has also hired MTB Atlanta’s Professional Trail building crew MTB Atlanta Pro Trails to do heavy maintenance on the jump lines at the park twice since their opening as well a rework the down hill only Flow trail at the park in Summer 2021.
“We are excited to formalize our work with City of Smyrna Parks and the City by entering into this MOU,” says Brett Davidson, Executive Director of MTB Atlanta. “The Board of MTB Atlanta has believed since we were first engaged with this project that the bike park at North Cooper Lake is the best example of a purpose built bike park in Metro Atlanta designed around progression and community. It is also the best place we’ve seen for kids and beginners to cut their teeth mountain biking and jumping with a tot track, progressive skills area, a hard surface pump track, slope style runs, downhill flow trails and a great XC trail system at the park. We value our relationship with Park staff and Parks Director Richard Garland. Our Board has a ton of gratitude for Director Garland, the community around the park and Mayor and Council for leading the way for our sport by funding and building the first purpose built bike park project in Metro Atlanta.”
Cyclists Asked Not to Use Part of Chamblee-Tucker Road During Construction

Tucker, GA — The city of Tucker has asked cyclists to refrain from riding their bikes on Chamblee Tucker Road during construction.
“PSA: During the Chamblee Tucker Road construction, please do not use bicycles, as the street cannot accommodate them at this time. When the project is complete, it will have a four-foot shoulder that bikes can use,” the city posted on social media.
City Engineer Ken Hildebrandt previously said bike lanes will not be marked because there is no trail connectivity at either end of Chamblee Tucker Road.”

Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee Track State Championships

The Dick Lane Velodrome will host the Georiga, Alabama, and Tennessee Track (velodrome) State Championships July 15-16. You must be certified to race on the track and be a DLV Cat. C to race mass starts. All certified riders are welcome for the Sprints and Time Trials. Riders will need a USAC license or one day license. As always, pets are not allowed at the velodrome per city of East Point ordinance and for the safety of the riders. Flyer Registration
Woodland Brook Closed
A post on Facebook from Cobb County Government says that Woodland Brook will be closed through Friday at the Vinings railroad tracks for road repair work. This road is popular with cyclists riding from Buckhead out to the Atlanta Cycling routes.

Rumble at Roebling Date Change

Well, I guess after all the Masters category changes we have another curve ball. We have a situation with the booking of the Roebling Race Track venue. After last years race when they asked us if we wanted our same weekend for 2022 and we agreed by booking the race course for the 2022 edition. I should have been clear that it was always the last full weekend in July. This year having 5 full weekends they booked us for the 23rd and 24th which is the 4th weekend this year. Our race will be held July 23rd and 24th. Not 30th and 31st. We have reached out to the Motorsport Club that has the weekend of the 30th and they cannot switch with us. If this interferes with travel or scheduling plans please know that we were completely blindsided with this and it is a simple miscommunication between us and the venue. On the bright side we were scheduling to open camping for Friday night when we realized we were not on the same page. So anyone wanting to camp can check in after 5PM Friday evening on the 23rd.

Chicopee Fire Damage Trail Repair

Trail Fire Work Party at Chicopee Woods, Saturday, June 25 8:45 am-1 pm. We need your help! A brush fire happened last Sunday 6/19 on White Tail Trail along the power lines. White Tail was damaged during the response. We need 10-15 folks to help fix the trail. Remember, you can earn an annual parking pass once you volunteer for a total of 16 hours. Lunch will be provided for those that either register to this Event or email us by noon on Friday (negasorba@gmail.com . We may have some swag to raffle too. Meet at the toolshed in the upper parking lot at 8:45 for sign-in. Bring plenty of water. Gloves and eye protection are recommended.

Silver Comet Carter Road Parking Lot

The Cobb DOT and Cobb Water will be working on the sink hole at the Carter Road Silver Comet Parking lot. They believe it goes under Carter Road, so there may be some closures. This parking lot is at mile marker 8.6 before Powder Springs. Update Trish’s Note: I rode by there on 6-22, and it looked like most of the work was done.
