Judge hands down guilty verdict in fatal Cedartown hit-and-run trial
From the Polk County Standard Journal
“An Aragon man’s decisions in the minutes after he hit a Cedartown man on a bicycle with his vehicle nearly four years ago led a judge to find him guilty on hit and run and reckless conduct charges Tuesday.
Ralph “Ryan” Dover III was driving south on North Main Street in Cedartown the evening of Sept. 11, 2019, when he struck Eric Keais, who was traveling in the same direction. Prosecutors said because Dover didn’t immediately report the incident to proper authorities it stretched out the time before Keais got medical care, leading to his death.
Testimony indicated that Dover drove more than half of a mile down the road after the collision to a convenience store instead of stopping sooner. He didn’t call police or 911, instead calling a friend, State Rep. Trey Kelley.” Read the full article (turn off your ad blocker).

Atlanta Streets Alive is Back!
From Urbanize Altnata
UPDATE: 11 Atlanta Streets Alive dates officially set
“The city’s signature open-streets program has been dormant for four long years
UPDATE: 10:34 a.m., July 20: Following Wednesday’s report that Atlanta Streets Alive will be resurrected soon after a four-year hiatus, District 2 city councilmember Amir Farokhi sends details Atlantans have long been waiting for: According to Atlanta Department of Transportation officials, Atlanta Streets Alive will officially return Sunday, September 24, opening a roughly three-mile stretch of Peachtree Street in downtown and Midtown to people and closing it to vehicle traffic. Later this year, Streets Alive will also be staged on that same Peachtree route on the third Sundays in October and November. But wait, there’s more! According to ATLDOT, Streets Alive will return to the three-mile Peachtree route in April next year—and then continue there on the third Sundays of every month through November 2024. No other routes have been announced. In other words, Atlanta’s signature open-streets program is officially back, rooted in a designated place with the city’s densest neighborhoods, and now more frequent than ever.” Read the full article.

Tucker Ride Troubles
From the Atlanta Peloton (and passed on with their request)
TUK Troubles This past Saturday’s TUK A will go down in PTN history as one of the biggest sh**show’s in our checkered past. Which is really saying something. Three separate crashes for totally different reasons. Awful. Hoping all those injured heal quickly and heal well. But “thoughts and prayers” ain’t enough. We are going to make a small change to mitigate a big risk.
The descent of Stewart Mill Road will be neutralized going forward.
This descent is not just fast but also hazard-filled, festooned with potholes, cracked pavement, and fast oncoming traffic in the other lane. And it was on this descent last week where a terrible accident occurred that could have been avoided if we were not racing like we were going down the Poggio. Henceforth, once we hit the stop sign on Bermuda Road, where we turn right onto Stewart Mill, the ride will be neutralized until we hit the dead-end stoplight at Rockbridge Road. This occurs just shy of 10 miles into the ride, from the downtown Tucker start.
What does neutralized mean??? We won’t have a red Audi coupe in front of the peloton with Christian Prudhomme popping out the sunroof to order calm ahead of the descent. Rather, once we turn off Bermuda, the pace should basically be freewheeling/coffee ride pace. And we will let the group fully reassemble before turning left through the light at Rockbridge Road.
The agreement that it will regroup at the light will allow everyone to be generously spaced and casually paced on this descent. Relax, Speed Racer. You ain’t chasing Pog or Vingygoo. And there will still be ample opportunities to smash on the ride after this neutralization. Ultimately, enforcement of this will rely on the veterans of the PTN. It’s an issue of collective action. Get to the front and do the right thing. This is the way.

Beautiful Backroads Century
From the BBC
On September 16th, the 23nd Beautiful Backroads Century Bicycle Ride (BBC) returns to the Anheuser-Busch Brewery with an even larger after ride party! For the Clubs and Bike Shops north of Atlanta, “the Budplant” provides free parking 51 weeks of the year to Georgia Cyclists often filling the parking lot. How about 1-time a year we give back to the community by riding this event for a local cause important to them. Hickory Log a local, personal care home for men with special needs, is the primary recipient of money raised for this event.
Distances include 14, 31, 48, 66, and 100 miles. Sag stops will be on every route with hydration and food.
The ride starts and finishes at the Anheuser-Busch plant in Cartersville complete with a food, beverage, and music after party. www.BBCbikeride.com

Happy 4th of July! Go ride your bike and enjoy the freedoms we have! I’m taking a few days off of updating Southeastern Cycling to do some things “under the hood” on the site.

GIHP Land on the Field Side are Sold-to Become a Soccer Complex
From the Rockdale Citizen
“CONYERS — The city of Conyers has agreed to sell nearly 300 acres of land that was purchased more than 30 years ago as part of the Georgia International Horse Park.
The City Council unanimously approved the sale at its June 7 meeting, agreeing to enter into a contract with Sportiff Real Estate LLC to sell the land for $7,165,250.
The council voted in April to declare the approximately 286 acres surplus so that it could be sold. City Attorney Carrie Bootcheck said the city advertised for public bids for sale of the property and received one bid from Sportiff. The company, which was formed Feb. 16, is based in Covington.”
Article about soccer complex Interesting note at the end: “But don’t fret, cycling and equestrian enthusiasts of Atlanta: Vierhout has vowed that mountain biking and horseback riding trails established as part of the Conyers Olympic venue will remain.”
