2-29-2016 DLV Women’s Class From Lori Walker: I am so excited to announce that the Dick Lane Velodrome will be offering a Women’s Track Racing class.   This is such exciting news! For the last three years we have tried to offer a women’s track racing class and every 3 out of the 5 classes (5 weeks, once a week) it either rained or it froze (freezing is any temp below 40 degrees for the track) but this year the women’s class will be  – every Monday. If it rains this Monday, you know there will be class next Monday. I have been a coach for many years and have noticed the clients that are consistent with their training are the clients that will improve and succeed. We are offering women track racing class every Monday – consistency. The class is open to all experience and newly certified trackies.  If you want to learn more about track endurance races, sprint type races, improve your sprint or your cycling skills you are invited to join the class. If you are brand new to the track you will need to take the certification class first.  The class fee is $5.00 / session or no fee for One Pass holders (season pass) Track bikes are available.  Please bring your helmet, shoes and water bottle.  Class starts on Monday, March 14th at 6:30.

2-16-2016 Forty-First Annual Assaults on Mt. Mitchell and Marion Announced Cycling Event Set for May 2016 Opens Registration, New Website Unveiled  SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Registration is open for the 2016 Assaults on Mt. This one-day century ride, known as the Southeast’s Premier Cycling Experience, attracts nearly 1,000 cyclists from around the world each year.  Cyclists can register for the Assault on Marion, which is a shorter, 74.2-mile ride from downtown Spartanburg, S.C. to Tom Johnson Campground in Marion, N.C., or the Assault on Mt. Mitchell, a 102.7-mile climb from downtown Spartanburg to the summit of Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi. Registration fees for the rides are $40 and $135, respectively. To register, riders can visit the new 2016 Assaults website – www.theassualts.com. The website also provides more information about the history of The Assaults, ride details and an online store. Registration will close Saturday, May 14 at noon.

Proceeds from the 2016 Assaults will support HUB Cycle, a program of Partners for Active Living. This program seeks to increase the availability of and access to bicycles for those relying on bicycles as a primary means of transportation in Spartanburg, S.C. The Freewheelers Cycling Association is pleased to announce that internationally-acclaimed retired professional cyclist George Hincapie will be riding in the 2016 Assault on Mount Mitchell, scheduled for May 16, 2016. Hincapie, a world-champion cyclist with many professional victories to his credit, is no stranger to The Assaults course as he has ridden the course several times.

2-13-2016 PLEASE do not email me asking about details for a certain race./ride/event/trail party. I don’t know the nuances and timing of every race or when this category is racing, why they are racing at that time, why they chose this route, etc. Contact the race or ride promoter with any questions. This is why Southeastern Cycling’s calendar offers a link back to the promoter’s or association’s website. Background: For those that may be new to the site, Southeastern Cycling is what I do in my “spare time” at 11:00 at night. I work a full time++ corporate job that pays my bills like gas, food, mortgage, power, and bike parts. I race for a wonderful team here in Atlanta & ride/train 4-5 days/week. I also have an active life outside of cycling and enjoy other pursuits. Those wonderful ads (Thank you to my awesome advertisers!) you see on the right side of the website pay for Southeastern Cycling expenses like web hosting, software needed to run the site, website development, domain registration, etc. Point being, I don’t have time to answer the 20-30+ emails/day I get about event details. I make liberal use of the delete key. That is what the amazing promoters are for, so please contact them! Having said that, I will always take the time to email a promoter back, put a press release on Southeastern Cycling, and get the word out about a race, event, or local news! THAT is what I’m good at & what I make time for. Thanks for your understanding!

2-11-2016 No Georgia Rides to the Capitol in 2016 From the Event:  Greetings, Georgia cyclists and supporters of better bicycling! Please note that the Ride to the Capitol will resume in 2017 and that there is not a ride planned for 2016. After a very successful 10 years, several key event organizers have moved on to new challenges and opportunities. In their absence, the Ride will go on a brief hiatus for 2016.

Summer Solstice 3 Hour Cobb County P.A.R.K.S. Department and SORBA West Georgia proudly present the 3rd Annual Summer Solstice 3 Hour Mountain Bike Race on the fast flowing trails of Allatoona Creek. Large open fields give way to forest as the trail converges on Lake Allatoona, providing a picturesque backdrop for what is sure to be one of West Georgia’s top cycling events. This year the course will be faster and more appealing for those looking for fast times. Race start times: 3 hour starts at 10:00am thru 1:00pm

2-10-2016 Georgia Pro Racing Round Up Georgia has several racers overseas with Pro Continental and World Tour Teams this year. Cyclingnews.com reports that “A day after Tanner Putt finished second to Caleb Ewan, John Murphy (Asheville, NC) went one better for UnitedHealthcare in Inverloch as he sprinted to stage 3 of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour (in Australia) in a photo finish ahead of Niccolò Bonifazio (Trek-Segafredo) with ONE Pro Cycling’s Steele von Hoff in third. Pre-stage favourite Ewan crossed the line in sixth place.”

Ken Roskoff provided this update about Joem (Team BMC) “Well, racing season has started.  Joey was a little late starting his training due to knee pain.  I think he has a handle on that now.  He says he had a good training camp in Spain two weeks ago.  His racing started today with the first stage of the Tour of Qatar.  BMC placed three of his teammates within 5 seconds of the winner, Mark Cavendish.  Joey finished with a group of riders that were about 12 minutes behind.  The average speed of the riders was over 30 mph!  That had to be hard, especially on so little training.   Look for Joey to improve with more races and conditioning.”

Georgia Bikes Classes Georgia Bikes offers several bike safety and educational classes. Here is a form with a description of our classes Instructional Ride, Safe Cycling/ Traffic Skills 101, and POST credited for Law Enforcement. And cost attributed to a class is for materials. As bicycle crashes have increased in Georgia, each one is valuable in any area. Questions? nedra@georgiabikes.org

Lupus Racing Team Friday night I had the pleasure of attending the Lupus Racing Team Presentation at Peachtree Bicycles. The LRT signed Chris Horner late last week, and he made an appearance. I talked to him & several others for about 15 minutes. Chris genuinely seems to want to race one more year after he did not get to race much in 2015. While much of the team is under 30, Chris is 44 and former Masters World TT Champion Michael Olheiser (Huntsville, AL) is 40. Southeastern riders include Michael Stone (Monroe, GA), Winston David (Greenville, SC), Oliver Flautt (Atlanta, GA), and Nolan Tankersley (Erwin, TN). DS and Atlanta Resident Brendan Sullivan told me that he really wants the Lupus Racing team to be Atlanta’s team to cheer for. So far, they are doing a great job1

Stay tuned to TBRA.org as we will be announcing the 2016 state championship time trial and 2017-2018 state championship road race in the near future.

“Gone Riding has a long history with USA Cycling that goes back to the early 1990’s,” said Gone Riding President and Race Director David Berger. “Due to positive changes at USA Cycling, we’re happy to announce that for no additional cost, we’ll once again provide our racers with the benefits of USA Cycling.” Some of USA Cycling’s goals in 2016 are to lower the barriers of entry to the sport of cycling, and to increase its support of amateur and grassroots racing. For mountain bike races, this means a $5 rebate on one-day licenses to the race director, the elimination of permitting fees, and the elimination of one-day licenses for practice days.

1-25-2016 ALL CALENDARS ARE UPDATED!! All calendars have been updated with the 2016 race information as of 1-24-2016. Please see the individual links at the top under “Races” for the current calendars. You can also see them all here on the 2016 Page. I update the calendars approximately once every 4 weeks. If the race is not listed, I don’t have a date or information for it. As always, PLEASE, PLEASE contact the promoters if you have a question about their race. What does that include? Race times, prize questions, directions to the race, anything you could think of about that specific race. PROMOTERS: Please contact me if you want your race listed! There is never any charge to have your race listed on the calendars. Send me any press releases you may have, too! They made be edited for length and clarity.

As this time I do not maintain a calendar for centuries, charity rides, fun rides, BRAG, or tours. I simply don’t have the time (Volunteers? Bueller? Bueller?). I offer a one time mention for a press release in the News Section of Southeastern Cycling. I recommend sending those to me 6-8 weeks before the ride date. I reserve the right to refuse to publish any press release or material sent to me.

The event is the first stage race in the state since the Tour de Georgia ended its run in 2008. Formerly known as the Gainesville Gran Prix, the 2016 Mission Source Tour of the Southern Highlands is transitioning to a pro/am stage race in this its fifth year of operation. The March 4-6 race is centered in the mountains of northeast Georgia. Race weekend will feature four events for the pros and three events for the amateur competitors.

Friday, Friday, FRIDAY! It all begins on Friday, March 4, with exciting street sprints in downtown Gainesville. These “drag races on bicycles” are part of the “S’More to Life” family fun night and include competition for the pros and the kids. On Saturday, March 5, the amateurs will join the action along with the pros for a time trial and a circuit race. Then, an epic road race with over 7,000 feet of climbing concludes the racing on Sunday, March 6.

The event is already attracting attention from many top racing teams. The three-day event has even been circled on the calendar of the U.S. Junior National Team as a team selection race. “We are very excited to reintroduce stage racing to Georgia. In addition, as a USA Cycling Junior National Selection Race, the 2016 Mission Source Tour of the Southern Highlands is the only race east of the Rockies offering juniors an opportunity to demonstrate their ability while bringing national attention to the our sponsors and this beautiful region”, said Nathan O’Neill, race co-director. The Mission Source Tour of the Southern Highlands is also seeking volunteers and host housing during the race week to accommodate the numerous riders, coaches and support staff that will flood the region. Just as the local community extends a warm welcome to the race participants through volunteering and by opening their homes, visiting teams are encouraged to give back to the Gainesville community by scheduling one or more school visits during their stay to provide the local school children with a great interactive experience. Those interested in volunteering our hosting visiting athletes should contact Co-Race Director Betty Hodges at 512-844-6383. Registration is open.

Freeze Thaw and Trails From SORBA Atlanta “It’s that time of year again night time temperatures drop below freezing and afternoon temperatures get warm and melt the frozen trails. This year Freeze Thaw has been amplified by all the precipitation last month. Indeed, December was the wettest in a century, coming within a quarter of an inch of breaking the 1911 record. Much of that moisture is still in the ground and will lead us to close the trails longer than usual.Nothing tears up a trail tread more than riding in Freeze Thaw. In the afternoon, all the trapped moisture in the tread thaws out and turns into mud. Riding on this surface leads to rutting which then traps rain and exacerbates the problem. You must have a tread that will easily shed water if it is to remain sustainable.’ Read the full article.

1-8-2016 Lupus Racing Team Press Release: The Lupus Racing Team has named former professional cyclist Phil Cortes as its Sports Director for the 2016 professional cycling season. The team will focus on premier road race events across North America, as well as select UCI-sanctioned stage races. Steve Carpenter will return in 2016 as the Assistant Sports Director, focusing on domestic races. The second-year UCI Continental men’s cycling team will compete under a new logo that will be incorporated in the redesign of all team kits, apparel and support vehicles. “I am excited to lead the team for a full season this year. We have tremendous support from our corporate and industry partners. And we continue to develop an aggressive strategy to support our mission to generate awareness for the proper diagnosis and treatment of the autoimmune disease of lupus,” said Cortes.

Managed by Cycle Culture Inc. in Atlanta, the Lupus Racing Team will continue its partnership with the Georgia Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America. Borrowing the colors of purple and green used to promote awareness for lupus, the new logo was developed with the help of returning team rider, Evan Murphy of New York. “We aimed at giving the team a long-term image that is clean, and distinctive. We are not just athletes working together as a professional cycling team, but we are also ambassadors working together to generate awareness to cure a disease,” said Murphy, who studied at Rhode Island School of Design. The complete redesign of the team gear and apparel will be unveiled at a team presentation event on Feb. 5. Peachtree Bikes in Atlanta will host the event, which will be open for the public to meet riders and management personnel.

The roster and race schedule for the Lupus Racing Team will be announced later this month. Team management announced the signing of 31-year-old Slovenian sprinter Jure Kocjan in December. The 13-year veteran won a stage at the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah and wore the race leader’s jersey for one day. “We are excited about formally introducing the Team to our sponsors and fans in a few weeks. We’ll be aggressive in many ways. It’s the backbone and DNA of what I want our team to be – aggressive, hard working, strategic. Having someone in the breakaway every day is a dream situation, both in terms of race tactics and for sponsor visibility. We will have a lot to talk about this season with Jure as the Team leader and a great mix of U.S. and international riders,” added Cortes.  Twitter: @LupusRacingTeam, Facebook: LupusRacingTeam

It was a great race to watch! At the end of the first lap, Spencer’s toe spikes got caught on something on the first barrier. He fell (see photo) and took about 15 seconds to get back up. On the third lap he put in a huge effort to take the lead. After that, he didn’t look back! Congratulations!!

1-6-2016 New Georgia Bicycle Law Firm From the Daily Report: “After 24 years solo, Decatur personal injury lawyer Bruce Hagen has formed a new firm, Hagen Rosskopf & Earle, with Ken Rosskopf, who focuses exclusively on bicycle wreck cases, and Hagen’s senior associate, Myrlin Earle. “Ken is the bike law guru for Georgia. He’s opened my eyes to that world,” said Hagen, who’s been subletting space to Rosskopf in his building, the Marble House, for about a decade. Over the years, they started collaborating on cases. Hagen said cyclists who have been hit by vehicles need zealous advocates. The general public, he said, likes “the idea of cycling, but we hate that they’re on the road. Every driver hates bicyclists.” So do juries, he added. “When we do jury selection, there is open anger and hostility against cyclists. I don’t know if it’s because jurors think they’re blocking the road or resent their freedom—as a group, riders bother people.” “They can’t wait for the opportunity to say cyclists don’t deserve the same protections as anybody else.” Trish’s Note: I am so excited for Ken and Bruce! They have given their expertise to cyclists for over a decade now! Congratulations!

1-3-2015 2016 Races I still don’t have too many promoters’ or race associations’ full calendars for 2016. I expect to see a lot more at the end of January-beginning of February as is normal. I’m updating them on the 2016 Race Page as I get them. Once I have the majority of the races, I’ll break them out into individual pages in about 4-5 weeks.

12-31-2015 Happy New Year!!! Go ride your bike! The answer to everyone’s question is–no, I don’t have any of the road schedules for the Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, or Alabama right now. (I take that back….GBRA has the tentative schedule posted. I’ll get it up in a day or two.) Typically they come out in mid to late January.

Tundra TT The 13th Annual Lillie Glass Tundra Time Trial will be held on Saturday February 13th, 2016. We have several great changes new for this year. The event is much closer to Atlanta (now the closest time trial to Atlanta!) and have relocated the race to South Fulton county around Serenbe Farms. While Serenbe Farms provides a great location to stage the race, it also provides for a great family day of activities after the race. This year, we have also added the Merckx category for the 2016 Tundra TT. For more information visit www.SurgeSports.com.

12-30-2015  My 2015 Thank Yous Thank you so much to everyone that has supported me in 2015! Southeastern Cycling and I could not have made it this far without you!

For myself:
-Smyrna Bicycles Thanks to Tom and Brown for keeping my bikes in top shape, for putting up with my occasional nuttiness & understanding it, and for some last minute “I’m racing tomorrow and my bike won’t….” issues.
-Sorella Cycling My teammates are amazing! I’m truly lucky to have been a part of the team for so long. My Sorella Sisters keep me going, heckle me at cross races, and are so much fun to be with!

Southeastern Cycling:
-Atlanta Cycling Thank you for being a huge supporter of Southeastern Cycling and Sorella! I love doing the rides from the shop and seeing new people come out and start their cycling journey. Atlanta Cycling carries Trek and has a full service shop (Ask for Ryan in Vinings for one of the best mechanics around!).
-Outback Bicycles Pete and crew rock! Thank you for supporting Southeastern Cycling and for the donations to my annual Cyclocross Clinic goodie bags! See them in Little 5 Points!
-KenBikeLaw Thanks to Ken Rosskopf for being a long time supporter of Southeastern Cycling and for some advice this year! Ken’s son Joey is Atlanta’s own World Tour Rider with Team BMC.
-Van Michael Salon Cycling Ladies love their Van Michael Salon! I’ve been a client for almost 10 years now and would not trade my stylist in Sandy Springs for anyone else! VMS gives a lot back to the cycling community. Thank you Van and Michael!
Free Flite Bicycles Thanks to Dan and Brian for helping me find a sweet Kuat hitch rack this summer! Free Flite has 3 locations. If you need a bike fit, see Michele; he’s amazing and has fit a ton of my friends! He’s been doing bike fits longer than almost anyone else in the area!
Cycle Therapy If you are north of Atlanta or in the Rome area, these guys can’t be beat for customer service! They host quite a few clinics throughout the year to keep locals up to date on the latest bicycling technology.
-Parks Law Have a need for an attorney and want one that understands cyclists? Clay Parks represents clients in most civil and criminal matters. Clay also races for the Litespeed-BMW team.
-Bike Rides Thank you to all pf the bike rides and races that have advertised with Southeastern Cycling this year! I’m glad to help get the word out about your events! Want to advertise with Southeastern Cycling? Monthly rates are very reasonable and lower than most other local options. There is a discount for ads of 3 or more months. Contact me for full information.

Milton Police Remember the incident earlier this fall where a Milton Police Officer buzzed a group of cyclists? Bike Law (including Atlanta’s Ken Rosskopf) held 4 one hour training sessions for the Milton PD. Thanks guys!
