7-29-2014 Southeast Regional Series Cycling Event Heads to Knoxville Press Release:  Greenville, S.C. (July 28, 2014) – Amateur and elite cyclists have their sights set on Knoxville, Tenn. for the weekend of August 9-10. This will be the fourth stop of the five-state competition for the Southeast Regional Series presented by Stan’s NoTubes (SRS). More than 450 cyclists, including members from local team KnoxVelo-Harper Auto, are expected to participate in the Knoxville Criterium and Road Race, a two-day event that offers prize money and points competitions. Currently, Dustin Antrican of Knoxvelo-Harper Auto leads the sprint competition in the Men’s Cat 5 division after three months of racing. The Knoxville Criterium begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, featuring a one-mile circuit through downtown Knoxville. There are 11 categorized races, from two junior events to races for Masters and professional men and women riders.

Sunday features nine categorized events among the beautiful terrain of Corryton, Tenn. for the Knoxville Road Race. Racers will navigate an 11-mile loop starting at Corryton School Road near House Mountain State Park. The route includes an uphill climb on Hogskin Road for The King of the Mountain/Queen of the Mountain points competition, a prize for the best climbers in the peloton. “We’re excited to return to Knoxville,” said SRS Director Marilyn Cullinane, who also owns Start Smart Cycling in Greenville, S.C. “The city has a lot of rich history and charm. Its natural beauty and scenic roads make it the perfect landscape for this competition. Spectators can see adrenaline-fueled racing from some of the best cyclists across the Southeast.”

Admission is free for spectators both days. The start/finish for Saturday events for the Knoxville Criterium is located on Howard Baker Jr. Boulevard, adjacent to the Knoxville Civic Auditorium and Coliseum. Racing starts at 8 a.m. and events are expected to finish at 4:45 p.m., with the awards ceremony to follow. The Knoxville Road Race on Sunday will begin at 8 a.m. with the 80-mile Men’s Pro 1 /2 event. The final race is expected to conclude at approximately 3 p.m. Local natural foods supermarket Earth Fare will provide lunches both days for all staff and volunteers, as well as snacks for racers and spectators to sample on Saturday.

The Southeast Regional Series presented by Stan’s NoTubes is the only road racing series for amateur and elite cycling teams which offers points competitions spanning multiple states in one region. The series offers over $50,000 in cash and prizes this summer, across five weekends of racing in five states. SRS is managed by Start Smart Cycling and offers points and prizes at each weekend series. The series concludes in September in Greenville, S.C. when the top men and women will be presented with the overall award jerseys, based on points earned at all five races: SRS Overall Champion’s jersey, the green- and- white-striped PEZ Cycling News Sprinter’s Jersey, and the Stan’s NoTubes King of the Mountain/Queen of the Mountain jersey. Additional sponsors include Knoxville-based auto dealership Harper Auto Square and bicycle shop Cedar Bluff Cycles, Earth Fare, Hincapie Sportswear and Mountain Khakis®. 7-28-2014 Mountain Biker Attacked at FATS Trail This was brought to my attention by a friend from Augusta, GA. From the Edgefield Daily: “MCCORMICK – A mountain biker riding on the FATS trails in the Merriwether area on Saturday decided to end his ride by going down to Stevens Creek. On the trip back to his car three men in “full camouflage” reportedly stretched a rope across the trail causing the rider to be thrown from his bike around 9 pm. The three men then attacked the downed rider and attempted a sexual assault before the man was able to fight them off and run from the scene. At least one of the men is said to have then fired a shot at the victim as he ran away.” Read the rest of the article on the Edgefield Daily website.

7-27-2014 General Reminder-Lock Your Cars! There have been several break ins lately at places where cyclists park to ride. Always remember-Take, Hide, and Lock! Take you wallet or anything that is of value with you or out of your car. Hide everything else. Lock your car! If you leave your purse, wallet, or laptop bag on the front seat of your car, it’s like asking a crook to break into your car! “Oh, hai, Mr. Crook! I’m here on the front seat, just waitin’ fur you!” If your car does get broken into, report it to the local police.

Greenville, SC News From the Greenville Spinners: “MAJOR REPAVING STARTS ON PERIMETER ROAD ON OR BEFORE JULY 27. IT WILL TAKE 3 MONTHS TO COMPLETE. IF IT RAINS AT ALL, IT WILL TAKE LONGER. The paving will be on 4.2 miles of the total 7.2 miles. The remaining last 3 miles owned by SCDOT has not yet been scheduled. Racing and riding on Perimeter Road will be SUSPENDED until further notice from the Greenville Spinners board. This will be in effect for at least the next three months. The country C rides will continue as planned.IF you have questions, please post them here on the FB page for all to see. Be happy because after its completion, we will have a WIDER, SAFER AND SMOOTHER RIDE THAN EVER BEFORE!” Trish’s note: This is great news if you have raced at Donaldson Center as part of the Greenville Spring Training Series. The roads have gotten really bad over the last few years.

7-24-2014 Weekday Alltoona Work Parties  From SORBA West Georgia: “We are making a big push to get the new Allatoona Creek Park trail open by the end of summer and we need your help!  Starting tomorrow, we will be hosting weekly Thursday evening work parties from 5:45 to approximately 8:00.  Tools will be provided.  Just bring long pants, sturdy shoes, gloves, bug spray and a friend or two.  We will meet at the Cheatham Road parking lot.  Thom Cerny will be leading the Thursday work days,”

7-23-2014 Paces Ferry Rd. Closed Cobb County tweeted that Paces Ferry Road will be closed at the CSX tracks for maintenance July 29-31. It was originally scheduled for  this week. It will affect several group rides next week.

7-22-2014  Georgia Cycling Gran Prix The Georgia Cycling Gran Prix begins Wed. “TopView Sports is bringing you the 8th Annual Georgia Cycling Gran Prix, from July 23-27, 2014. This  yearly tradition has racers across the Southeast targeting these 5 days at the end of July with extreme anticipation. This year’s event will consist of six exhilarating and challenging races over 5 days. 7-21-2014 Georgia Cross Schedule Update With the unfortunate cancellation of the Savannah Superprestige in the Georgia Cross Series, Smynra Bicycles has stepped up to promote a second race at Boundry Waters Park on Nov. 16. The promoter has promised a course that is much different than the first race. He has not, however, promised that the course will not frustrate Kyle. Rumor has it that the Bama Cross Anniston Night Race will be Nov. 15th. Go ahead and plan the double header!

7-19-2014 Mountain Bike Nationals Several Southeastern riders are racing at the US Mountain Bike National Championships this weekend. Saturday was XC. Congratulations to Greg Turner, who was 3rd in the Cat. 1 Men 50-54. Don’t worry young guns, he’ll be back in GA soon to be you up at the races! In the Cat. 1 Women 35-39, Lisa Randall of Canton, GA (Super Sport) was 2nd. Her teammate Carey Lowry of TN was 3rd in Women’s Single Speed. Zdenka Worsham (Constellation Cycling) of Raleigh, NC took 2nd. In Master Men 70-74 Charles Goodrich of Southport, NC was 2nd. In Men Junior Ages 6-8 Andrew Menlo of Woodstock, GA got 5th place. In short track, Elliot Barring (Reality Bikes) won 3rd in Men 19-29.

7-18-2014 Labor Day Century From Atlanta Cycling: The Atlanta Cycling Stores-Ansley and Vinings, are proud to sponsor this event. Please join us Labor Day morning for a metric century through the rolling, rural countryside of South Fulton County in support of the church that is so supportive of cycling in the community. Routes of 24, 40, 50 and 62 miles will be painted and supported. An ‘ole fashion summer picnic will greet the riders upon their return. Ride this event to see why these roads are called Silk Sheets.

On-line registration closes at midnight August 30th. Registration is $27. Day of registration opens at 8:00 am. Please register early. Riders may pick up their wrist bands and registration info on the morning of the event. All routes are supported and clearly marked. The terrain is gently rolling using very low traffic roads, and riders are never more than 20 miles from the start. The picnic following the ride uses the church’s covered pavilion. Silver Comet Resurfacing Cobb County DOT says that the Silver Comet resurfacing is running ahead of schedule. “The resurfacing of the Silver Comet Trail is AHEAD of schedule. Three of the four sections of the popular 12.8 mile trail in Cobb County will be completed by the end of today. The last section will be closed for resurfacing and shoulder rehabilitation. 7-17-2014 Arrest Made! UPDATE: The 6:00 am Fox 5 News reports that Joseph Lewis, the driver of the car that hit Greg Germani, has been arrested. More to come….UPDATE: Joseph Lewis was denied bond on Thursday.

From Decaturish: “Atlanta Police on July 16 announced the arrest of a woman accused of helping her boyfriend cover up a crime that landed a local cyclist in the hospital.

Police issued an alert asking people to be on the look out for Joseph Alan Lewis, 19. Police accuse Lewis of using a red Dodge Nitro to run down Germani. The incident happened on June 9 on Flagler Avenue in Atlanta’s Morningside community. Germani remains in the hospital. On July 16, Atlanta Police arrested Shanelle Woodard, 22 and charged her with evidence tampering, a felony.

Lewis faces charges of criminal attempt to commit murder, serious injury by vehicle and other charges, police said. The Germani case outraged the cycling community, who rallied to raise nearly $30,000 to donate to Crime Stoppers as a reward for information about this case. 7-15-2014 Woodland Brook Closed Woodland Brook at the CSX tracks in Cobb County-Vinings (near Log Cabin Rd.) is closed July 14-17 for maintenance. This is a popular road for cyclists and part of several routes.

SCT Rockmart Trailhead The Silver Comet Rockmart Trailhead will be closed Friday and Sat., July 18-19. The Rockmart Homespun Festival is being held there.

Coming back for 2014 and the fifth time that we’ve ever done it, we’ll be hosting a Junior Track Championships. This race day will follow a format with some similarities to the Junior National Championship events for each division of Juniors. State Championships will be awarded for Georgia Omnium Champions, although the event will be open to all riders from any state.

SCT Paving Update Some paving closure dates for the Silver Comet have changed according to the Cobb DOT:
June 17, 2014 Resurfacing Update: Silver Comet Trail resurfacing began June 2, 2014 and will run through August 29, 2014. RESURFACING ACTIVITIES ARE ONLY SCHEDULED MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY. THE ENTIRE TRAIL WILL BE OPENED FOR USE ON ALL WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS DURING THIS TIME. SOME WORK IS SCHEDULED TO BE PERFORMED AT NIGHT.
Section 1 between Mavell Road Trail Head and Floyd Road is scheduled to be closed through Monday June 23, 2014.
Section 2 between Floyd Road and Anderson Farm Road is scheduled to be closed starting on Tuesday June 24 through Friday July 11, 2014.
Section 3 between Anderson Farm Road and Old Lost Mountain Road is scheduled to be closed starting on May July 14 through Friday August 1, 2014.

Alabama Man Pleads Guilty in Anti-Cycling Viral Video Case From the Anniston Star: “A judge on Tuesday ordered a Piedmont man to undergo anger management for charges of reckless endangerment stemming from videos the defendant made speeding past local cyclists. Keith Maddox, 48, was arrested on the misdemeanor charges May 22 after he posted videos on his Facebook page of himself speeding past cyclists on the road. The videos show Maddox driving along DeArmanville Road, complaining that cyclists are holding up morning traffic, and in one, it appears he drives close to a cyclist before speeding away. “I oughta run him in the ditch is what I should have done,” he says in the video. The videos spread across the Internet, setting off outrage among cyclists across the country.”” Read the full article at the Anniston Star.

6-14-2014 APD Releases Video The APD has released the video of the assault that severely injured Greg Germani. The assault itself is not seen, but you can clearly see the vehicle chasing Greg. If you have any information, contact Crime Stoppers 404-577-TIPS or the APD.

A fund to help increase the reward in the case of the Flagger St. Auto-on-Bike-Assault has been set up. Crime Stoppers has the reward at $2000, but it is hoped that $5000 will be raised to help bring in a tip that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator. Anyone can donate any amount.  Trish’s Note: This fund is for the Crime Stoppers Reward. The money goes to Crime Stoppers to entice people to call in tips about the crime. This is NOT a fund set up to help the victim or his expenses directly.

Cyclist Hit Cyclist Greg Germani was intentionally struck on his bicycle Monday evening on Flagler Ave. in Northeast Atlanta. DLV Update & Workday From the DLV “We are planning a couple of work sessions to get the track back to a ridable state so we can continue with our programming as soon as possible. We will be at the velodrome to get started tonight from 6pm, and then we’ll be at it again tomorrow from 9am until work is completed. In general, tasks will include clearing debris from the area, setting fence posts and building a set of boards to act as replacements for a week or so until we can get the real boards rebuilt. We are expecting to have another workday potentially this coming weekend to get the real boards finished up and in place, so we’ll have those details posted in the next couple of days.” Trish’s Note: They hope to get everything ready to race on Wed. night.

Chain Buster Announces Huge Payout for Its 12 Hour Mountain Bike Night Race Series Finale Chain Buster Productions has announced its payout schedule for the Nite Nationals (the final race in the 12 Hour Dark Nite Series). The race, to be held at Chewacla State Park in Auburn Alabama on October 25, 2014, will begin at 9:00pm in the CCC Camp area of the park and proceed quickly to the Chewacla trail system. The new payout schedule is the biggest in night racing and is larger than Chain Buster has ever offered. Maximum payouts of $1,500 in Expert categories (both male and female) lead the way, followed by cash payouts in almost every other category

The race course will be approx. 10 miles of hand built flowy single track. The trail is entirely single track with the exception of the infield and was all hand built. The trail includes a historical bike path that was built in the 1900s by Dean Petrie of Auburn University and has rocks, roots and a few wooden bridges. The trail is moderately technical due to its hand built features and a number of natural features.

The race also serves as a fundraiser for Central Alabama Mountain Pedalers (CAMP), which is one of the premiere IMBA (International Mountain Bicycling Association) chapters in the Southeast region, serving the Auburn/Opelika area of East Central Alabama. This hardworking and motivated group is dedicated to improving the lives of the people living and visiting East Alabama. CAMP’s goal is to promote trail advocacy, health, wellness, and education by developing, maintaining, and riding sustainable multi-use trails in our locality.

The 12 Hours of Nite Nationals is the final race in the Dark Nite Series, sponsored by Title Sponsor Nite Rider Technical Lighting Systems, Maxxis Tires and Terrapin Beer Company. The Dark Nite Series is the first and only 12 hour night mountain bike series in the US and each race tests a racer’s stamina, mental acuity and ability to focus on trails with nothing but the beam of light emitted from their headlight. Races in the series feature zombies, monsters, Terrapin beer and food trucks to keep the racers and their crews awake and involved in the action.

6-10-2014 DLV Closed From the DLV: “Due to a car accident that resulted in some damage to the fencing at the velodrome, the track will be closed until further notice. We are working to assess the damage and determine a course of action that will get the track back into a safely ridable state. We’ll post an updated status as we have it, but until further notice, the track will be closed and all programs will remain suspended.”

Tour De Pig   Tour de Pig Saturday, October 11, 2014 Davidson Co. Community College Thomasville, NC The Tour De Pig is an Official Event of the Barbecue Festival and a fund raiser that benefits the Davidson Co. Mental Health Assn. There are routes for all levels of riders from 20K to 100K. Participants are treated to a delicious barbecue lunch after the ride.

 6-7-2014 Mt. Paran Pothole Update The pothole on Mt. Paran Rd. has been plated, but the plating job is horrible. There is a gap between the pavement and the plate. There are also several holes in the plate that could eat a front wheel. Be VERY careful going over these plates. I rode them myself tonight, and I went very, very slowly. They are on a turn, so you don’t want to cross the yellow line because a car cannot see you.

6-5-2014 POTHOLE WARNING! There is a HUGE hole on Mt. Paran Road. It is going west towards Cobb Pky. a little past the small store (maybe 1/4 mile) at Northside Dr. It’s on a blind turn. It is easily 2 feet deep and 2 feet wide. Please be careful! It took out three riders on a group ride last night. One if ok, one will need shoulder surgery, and the third has several broke bones and a concussion.  The city has NOT put a plate on it as of 9:00 pm 6-4-2014 although a work order has been placed with the city.

6-3-2014 SRS Huntsville Race Press Release: Huntsville, Alabama is renowned for the high-velocity missiles and space orbiters that are part of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center®, the official NASA Visitor Information Center for the Marshall Space Flight Center. The weekend of June 14-15, the Rocket City will be the showcase for high-velocity, two-wheeled vehicles on the ground.  The Southeast Regional Series presented by Stan’s NoTubes (SRS) bring some of the best amateur and elite cyclists to Huntsville for the second of five stops this summer.

The Jerry Damson Honda/Acura Criterium begins at 8am on Saturday, offering an eight-turn circuit on the University of Alabama-Huntsville campus. There are 11 categorized races on Saturday, from two junior events to races for Masters and pro riders. Following the race from 6-9 p.m., Bicycles Etc. (611 Meridian Street) will host a post-criterium mixer with food and beverages. This is catered by Tellini’s Pasta Market and New Belgium Beer.

Sunday features nine categorized events in the Ronde van Grant Road Race presented by New Belgium Beer. Adult racers will navigate a 19-mile loop across the top of Grant Mountain and along the Paint Rock River in Grant, Ala. The loop, known as the Ronde van Grant by local cyclists, is a tribute to the hilly terrains of the classic races in Belgium. The finishing straightaway includes a challenging 1.4-mile climb on Gunter Mountain, known as ‘Grunt’ Mountain by local riders, with the finish line at historic Kate Duncan Smith DAR School on Main Street  in Grant (6077 Main Street).  This area features some of the best cycling roads in North Alabama and is on many roads popular with local cyclists.

Fans will enjoy listening to live commentary of both races at the start/finish areas.  The special guest announcer for SRS will be Jackie Crowell, a member of the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team.  She will be handling the race announcing for the remaining four city stops for SRS the rest of the summer. Crowell, who turned professional in 2009 after attending University of Florida, was diagnosed with a grade 4 brain tumor last fall. She had surgery to remove a tumor and has undergone successful chemotherapy near her residence in Atlanta, Ga. Crowell is a six-time U.S. amateur road national champion, as well as 2012 Elite National Points Race Champion and the Elite National Team Pursuit Champion. She raced much of her career in Europe, including the two years at La Route de France International Féminin (Tour de France for women). “It’s a great opportunity for me to give back to the sport of cycling. I do have a lot of experience racing, and coaching. It is especially rewarding to work with an event like Southeast Regional Series that includes women’s criterium and road racing events,” said Crowell, who gained some experience as a race announcer earlier this year with events in Charlotte, N.C. and Athens, Ga.

Admission is free for all spectators both days. Spectators can see the start/finish of Saturday events for the Jerry Damson Honda/Acura Criterium on Ben Graves Drive adjacent to Frank Franz Hall on the campus of UA-Huntsville. Racing starts at 8am and events are expected to finish at 4:45 p.m., with the awards ceremony to follow. The Ronde van Grant Road Race presented by New Belgium Beer will begin at 8 a.m. with the 75-mile Men’s Pro 1 /2 event. The final race is expected to conclude at approximately 3 p.m. Local food truck Earth and Stone will be at the finish line Sunday for racers and spectators. “Spectators will enjoy exciting racing on Saturday at the Jerry Damson Honda/Acura Criterium. It is a technical seven-tenths of a mile course with eight turns on the campus of the UAH.  Winners on this course are true criterium aces and master bike handlers.  We hope that all the racers, volunteers, friends and families will enjoy a post-race mixer at Bicycles Etc. Saturday night, with complimentary pizza and liquid carbohydrates provided by Tellini’s Pasta Market and New Belgium Beer.  This is a good way to decompress after a big day of hard racing,” said Morgan Andriulli, board member of the Alabama Bicycle Coalition.

As a USA Cycling Regional Road Championship series, the SRS is the only elite and amateur road series of events to offer points competitions spanning multiple states in one region. SRS is managed by Start Smart Cycling and offers points and prizes at each weekend series. The series will conclude in September in Greenville, S.C. when the top men and women will be presented with the overall award jerseys, based on points earned at all five races:  SRS Overall Champion’s jersey, the green- and- white-striped PEZ Cycling News Sprinter’s Jersey, and the Stan’s NoTubes King of the Mountain/Queen of the Mountain jersey. More than 450 cyclists competed at the first SRS event in Albany, Georgia in May. Racers are encouraged to register early before fields close at midnight on Friday, June 13 for the Jerry Damson Honda/Acura Criterium and the Ronde van Grant Road Race. On June 13 from 7-9 p.m. race packets will be available for pick up at the Tellini’s Pasta Market. Haw Creek Work Party From RAMBO: “We have a great opportunity to rebuild large sections of Haw Creek Park between 6/7 and 6/15. On 6/7 we will have a trail building day from 8 to 1 pm. We will clear the new trail that will replace ALL of the road sections with single track. During the week 6/9 through 6/13 we could use some volunteers to help the trail builder. Please let us know your availability and we’ll get you connected directly with Stephen. On Saturday 6/14 we will have a trail building day 8 to 1 pm to hopefully finish the tread on the new sections built. These 2 trail building days will replace our usual one on 6/21. Thanks to everyone that can come help us make great improvements to this wonderful park.

Allatoona Creek Workday From SORBA-West Georgia, There will be a workparty at Allatoona from 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday, June 14. 5690 Old Stilesboro Road, in Acworth – Meet at Bathroom Building. “Work will continue on the new 4 mile intermediate to advanced trail. This  a really cool project so come on out and help so you can say you were part of the build. We may also be doing some repairs to Mason’s Bridge to prepare for the Summer Solstice Race. 6-2-2014 Atlanta Cycling Festival The Atlanta Cycling Festival starts this weekend! The ACF is a week long festival of biking in Atlanta. There are parties, road rides for all levels including a few fast training rides for the racer types, clinics, bike trivia, and a SOPO Intown Cyclocross Ride! Southeastern Cycling is proud to sponsor the ACF! We hope to be at several of the events.

The best sprinters will do battle against the best endurance riders throughout the evening to see who is the best all-rounder at the Dick Lane Velodrome. It’s a speed the whole family will enjoy, eat from our great concession stand and enjoy the home of track cycling in Atlanta. The only time where cycling with NO BRAKES is considered fun! 5-29-2014 Racing This Weekend There are only a few things going on this weekend: May 31 All that Jazz Crit, May 31 Junior Track Championships DLV, May 31 Canal Crown MTB TT, May 31-June 1 Rockabilly Gran Prix, June 1 Bicycle Post Crit,  Saturday and Sunday is the long running mountain bike race Bump N Grind at Oak Mountain State Park in AL. DH and STXC is on Saturday, and XC is on Sunday.

5-28-2014 Silver Comet Paving Paving on the Silver Comet will begin June 2. From the PATH: “The Silver Comet Bridge Repairs are now complete and soon the Cobb DOT will be repaving the Cobb County portion of the Silver Comet Trail starting June 2nd. This will affect the entire stretch of the Silver Comet Trail within Cobb County. Resurfacing will begin in early June and is scheduled for completion before the Labor Day weekend.

The 12.8 mile trail will be repaired and resurfaced in 4 or 5 sections. Each 2 to 3 mile long section will be closed to all traffic for 2 to 3 weeks. Work will include pavement repair, resurfacing, restriping and shoulder restoration making the entire trail look like a brand new trail. Each section will be completely finished and opened before the next 2 to 3 mile section is started and closed. While the Silver Comet will be closed at these construction sites during this time frame, the entire Trail will be completely open on all weekends and Holidays.”
