Airport Ride Official Announcement! From Chisel:

Subject: Winter Airport Loop Ride 2003/2004 Rules and Regulations

The moment you have all been waiting for. The official start of the universally known Airport Loop Ride. Start date: Sunday ,November 2,2003, Duration: Every Sunday through March 28 ,2004, Time: 10:00 AM Eastern Standard Time, Official start location: Georgia Grille parking lot at Peachtree Battle/Nancy Creek [Right side of Peachtree heading South]
Mission: To provide a safe, fun off season ride so that experienced cyclists and triathletes may build aerobic off season base fitness and to create a safe, comfortable environment for novice/beginner cyclists and triathletes to develop the skills necessary to ride safely and effectively in a pack while building base fitness. If for whatever reason, insecurity and uncontrolled testosterone being two of them ,you feel you cannot abide by these rules, DO NOT show up for this ride. We do not want you or need you.

Liability: YOU assume all risks inherent with operating a bicycle on public roads. This ride is sponsored or presented by NO ONE and NO ONE but YOU is liable for any injury or damage to you, your bike or car [from parking in ANY lot] that may occur.

Below is the description of how the ride usually unfolds and the OFFICIAL RULES and REGULATIONS of the Airport Ride. If you do not follow them you will incur the monumental wrath of the peleton and forever be shamed and banished from participating in this adventure.

The ride begins promptly at the GA Grille lot at 10 AM. You assume all risks of towing or damage to your vehicle if you park here. Check with the lot landlord if you are unsure of the regulations there. No one may leave the lot before 10 AM. The group meanders South along Peachtree and picks up pods of cyclists along the way as they wait with anticipation for the peleton after leaving their Midtown and Virginia Highlands hamlets. The peleton must occupy one lane ONLY as the group will swell in numbers .It is advisable to obey ALL traffic signals for yours and the entire groups safety. After passing by Underground the group will take a right onto Trinity. Trinity becomes world famous Highway 29 as it angles left over the bridge. Many riders join the ride here. Arrival time is appox. 10:25 AM at the Trinity Lofts area but err early if unsure. The ride follows 29 past the Airport. The cities of College Park and East Point have been very cordial to the group as it passes through their boundries. So let's keep it that way by using ONE LANE ONLY. This is difficult because of the size of the peleton. Usually, several experienced riders will keep the speed in the 22-25 mph range along this stretch in order to elongate the peleton and attempt to keep it in one lane. If you feel you are stronger than the folks up front, make you way in front of them to set tempo but do not ride off the front. Riders in the middle and back should not fear the speed at the front...you will never feel it and this is a flat route out to the LEFT turn across the railroad tracks at the Mannheim Auto Auction property. Shortly, the group will take a right for the first NATURE BREAK. Be careful here, as the group slows. Do not plow into riders in front of you. The stay here is 5 to 10 minutes. The ride heads out to the right and will eventually be nearing the railroad track split for the 50 and 70 mile options. This is important. Although there are numerous city limit and county line signs along this ride...THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO SPRINTING ALLOWED, WHATSOEVER. Sprinting causes chaos as wankers chase the wankers in front of them up the road to perceived glory and cause the orderly procession of the peleton to evaporate. As we near the left turn for the 70 mile option it is a good idea for those familar with this ride to begin yelling loudly...70 LEFT...50 STRAIGHT...as this is where folks want to plow into each other. The 70 group goes left and the 50 straight. Historically here, the insecure, testosterone laden riders who choose to go straight want to jack the pace. Do not do this. Let the splintered peleton form again and continue riding tempo. The 50 group will eventually hit 29 and take a right onto it. At this point as the peleton now heads back North to Atlanta many riders will increase the pace. It is up to you whether or not you want to try and stay with them or hang back and continue riding tempo back in. It is strongly suggested no one jack the pace here. If you are flying in November, December, and January on this ride, you are guaranteed to not be flying and possibly injured when the racing begins early spring. It's the law of the jungle and you are not above it. The 70 group will encounter beautiful country roads and also eventually end up taking a right on 29 heading North. Within a mile is the Chevron store stop at Palmetto. This stop is 10 minutes. If you choose to take your second NATURE BREAK behind the store, do so DEEP in the woods as the Palmetto Police will ticket you otherwise. After leaving the store onto 29 several will want to mimic the faster pace described above. Same suggestions for not doing this apply here. That's it, both options take you straight back into ATL."

From Trish: I have created a small cue sheet. I don't know some of the names of the roads but will try to get them eventually. The route is fairly flat to rolling and simple to know after you've done it once or twice. For more recreational riders that prefer a casual ride: This is a training ride. Even at "tempo" or "base", you can expect a pace of 19-22 mph. Be prepared to get dropped if you cannot keep up. There are potholes. Carry tubes, food, and water. No one will wait for you if you have to stop (other than scheduled nature breaks). There is no ride leader. There is no map. The road are NOT marked. Carry your cell phone. No one is responsible for you or your bike except yourself.

Balance in Life Kerry Millar has written a great article on balancing the cycling and non-cycling aspects of life on the Team Cycleworks site. Read it.

Maybe a Not So Silly Season This year is shaping up to be a calm year for team changes in Atlanta. With the exception of one or two rumors, most teams look to be staying intact, and many riders have already found teams for next year. There may be a new women's team on the horizon (or could that be two) as well as the folding of another long time team (no, not THAT big one). Having said that.....

Cat. 3 Women-Do You Need a Team for 2004?? Are you a Cat. 2 or 3 woman that is looking for a team next year?  I may have something for you. Email me your resume, and I will pass it on. This very small team is looking for solid Cat. 2 & 3 Women riders that will be concentrating on regional and state road races next year. Team participation in group and training rides is a MUST as is racing regularly. Riders should be strong all around riders. A preference is given to women living in Cobb County although all riders will be considered according to my sources.

10-29-2003 SAUL RAISIN SIGNS WITH CREDIT AGRICOLE I've followed Saul's career since he was a Junior of about 15. The owner of a shop in TN that I respect said to watch him--he's going somewhere. Saul is from Dalton, GA and is one of the nicest people I have ever met in addition to being a great rider. He has a lot of potential.

Saul, I know you read Southeastern Cycling occasionally, and I hope you see this. We here in Georgia wish you all the best. Good luck with Credit Agricole next year. We are all cheering for you!

Saul Raisin Signs with Credit Agricole

"Colorado Springs, Colorado (October 27, 2003) - Up and coming CTS athlete Saul Raisin has signed with Credit Agricole's division III team for the 2004 cycling season. After a tremendous 2003 season riding for Ofoto-Lombardi Sport Professional Cycling Team and the US National Team, which included a 3rd Overall at Rond De L'Izard and Best Young Rider at the Tour de Georgia, Raisin is excited to make the transition to a European team.

"Going to Credit Agricole was a hard decision to make. Next year I will be living in Europe most of the season racing guys that don't speak any English, but this will give me the opportunity learn a new language and live like a real professional,” stated Raisin. “I am very exited and looking forward to learning a tremendous amount and continuing to grow as a professional cyclist." The team
will consist of around 10 riders (6 that are Espoir). They will focus on most U-23 World Cup races, and several Pro/Amateur events. Some of the races the team will focus on are Ronde De L'Isard, Le Transalsace, and Tour de l'Avenir.

The Barnes & Noble bookstore is out on the Atlanta Hwy in the same shopping center with Old Navy & Chuck E Cheese, just before you get to the loop. We don`t get a lot of pro mountain bikers coming to this area, so this might be an opportunity to meet & chat. Heck, I think we might even try to talk her into doing a night ride with us Tuesday night after the event. Thanks, Patrick"

11-3-2003  Macon Cyclocross Race First: Trish's Rant Thanks to Rob at Thomson for putting on the races this weekend. He had a hard job and made the best of some tough situations. Racers: Remember that the promoters are doing this for us. Some things are completely beyond even their control (not course related). Take my word on the last sentence. If you want SAFE, go take your bike on the Silver Comet or sit on the couch and watch television. If you can't ride something, walk it. That's what we do in mountain biking. Cyclocross is NOT about riding on the road over smooth surfaces. I think that's called Road Racing. CX is about riding on different types of terrain with transitions between them-dirt, grass, asphalt, sand, over barriers, up short steep hills, bumps, off camber, on camber, flat, straight, twisty. If you think a road crit is safe, think again! I see more crashes at road races and crits than I do at any mountain bike race. If you don't know how to handle a bike, get a mountain bike and start riding it. You will learn handling skills very quickly. Mountain bike skills have a very important place in learning to handle your bike off road. This includes cyclocross. I have to admit that I did not ride the part that was taken out; however, in speaking with several B and A riders, the part that was taken out was not that difficult. MOST of us that race have jobs to go to on Monday and significant others to go home to. See the above about being safe. I will agree that the planned 5 dismounts per lap was too much and that the laps as originally planned were a tad too long. Series organizers...communication is key with your promoters! Thanks also to the super friendly volunteers! Registration was quick, and plenty of safety pins did appear. As always, this is just my opinion (and written late at night tonight and a little discombobulated). If you want to have a rebuttal published, send me an email. Your real name must be signed along with your email address. Southeastern Cycling will not publish anonymous rebuttals.

Now, on with the races. Andy Johnson continued his winning streak in the Men's A race. The women's race hit double digits with 10 entries, a new record for us. Way to go ladies! I'd like to say thanks to everyone: Lisa Ropke (Sobe-Cannondale), Kathleen Tokuda, Kerry Meyers, Esther Davis, Cathy Boland (Velo Bella), Lisa Safstrom (Velo Bella), Becky Caldwell (All 3 Sports), Kim Sawyer (Nalley), Trish Albert (Boneshakers-Team Peggy), and someone who I don't know. In addition, Rose Mauney raced in the Juniors, and another woman from Covington did the beginner race.  Lisa Ropke dominated the field again with her win in the Women's race. Kim gave a good chase and finished 2nd with mountain biker Kathleen in third. Coming back from a lap down because of a flat, Esther was 4th, Kerry 5th, Trish 6th, and Becky 7th. (Missing results are because I cannot remember). The Masters categories were well filled. Tony Scott (Genesis) won the 30+. Sorry, I don't have any other results because I forgot to write them down. Pictures to come soon. All series class winners today received a lovely custom Voler Series Leaders jersey.

Lula Lake Weekend-SORBA November 15-16, 2003 Lula Lake trail weekend. Come join us for two days of trail work, riding, and camping at beautiful Lula Lake Land Trust on Lookout Mountain. Call 706-937-4138 or email tjcfeldt@msn.com for directions/details.

Women's Team News Bike.com published some interesting thoughts on Women's racing and the lack of developmental programs. Genesis and the Fuji Southeastern Women's Cat. 4 series were mentioned. The article also included partial rosters for 2004 women's teams that will contest the NRC. Shannon Hutchinson and Tracy Sproule will be staying with Cola-Vita Bolla. From the Genesis side, it is reported that Angie Vargas will be back with an eye towards a 2004 Olympic berth on the Track team. Tina Pic and Laura Van-Gilder will also be racing in the turquoise and white. Kori Kelly, a former Diet Rite teammate of Tina Pic, has also been signed.

Pardon Us! Pardon our dust! I've had problems the last few weeks publishing Southeastern Cycling and will be moving things around a little bit in anticipation of a page redesign this winter. If a day or two go by with no updates, be patient! I'm about to get  DSL at home in the next few weeks, which should cure all the publishing problems. Also, thanks for all the great comments I got this weekend. I really enjoy hearing them and know that people actually read the drivel I write here (or at least read the useful information).

11-5-2003 We Are Back! Thanks for your patience. All problems seem to be resolved for the time being. Onto the good stuff!

John Floyd on TV I received an email from John Floyd's mom, Ellen Bramlett, the other day. John is the Junior Racer that was hit by a car last year. She reports that he is doing very well. The Discovery Health Channel has a special that will feature John's surgery and a profile on John. Ellen warns that it might be graphic, and you might not want to watch it if you are squeemish.  (reprinted with Ellen's permission): "And lastly: for those of you who have Discovery Health Channel, the airdates of the Mayo Documentary including John's story are below. We haven't seen a preview of the tape so have no idea what we're in for... but don't forget it will include footage of surgery, so you mightwant to keep your barfbag handy (a-hem) - Friday Nov 14, 10 PM (EST) - repeat later that night at 1 AM - repeat Sunday Nov 16, 12 PM."

New Brewery Ride Rules From another email I received: "For those of you who ride out of the Cartersville Brewery, please note the following: Subject: IMPORTANT BREWERY RIDE RULES
Good Morning Riders,  There are behavioral changes that we have to implement to keep riding from
the Brewery Parking Lot. They are:

(1). Please Please do not use the bathroom on Brewery Property. If they catch riders doing this many more times we will not be riding from the Brewery. Please police others if you see them. I know Neal and I have spoken to offenders and they were very nice and not offended. Explain to them those Black Glass Windows are so they can see us even if we can not see them and there are cameras. The Brewery will not tolerate that behavior.

(2). From now on please park in the far right hand corner of the South Employee parking lot and do not block the gate over there. We normally take a left in to the fenced lot. Now take a right and go to the far right hand corner.

(3). When riding on Brewery property ride single file. That means leaving as well as returning. We leave the Brewery property at the 4 Way stop. This means SINGLE file to the sign and SINGLE file from the
sign. (I know I am the most guilty of this but I am changing now.)

(4). Do NOT warm up, cool down or check your newest repair buy riding around the parking lot. Thank you for your cooperation.

Riding with the Big Dogs One class that is unique to mountain biking (ok, borrowed from tris) is the Clydesdale Class. SC State CX Championships The Spartanburg Freewheelers will host the SC State Cyclocross Championships on December 13th at Duncan Park in Spartanburg. The following day is the final of the Georgia CX Series in Athens.

Greenville News The Greenville News had a story about Cyclocross on Oct. 14. It profiles the SC State CX Championships.

11-6-2003 Nathan O'Neill Calls Georgia Home Former Saturn rider Nathan O'Neill is calling Georgia home. In a recent interview for the Tour De Georgia newsletter, he states that "I love it! Georgians are very friendly, and Georgia is a beautiful state in which to train. People have been helpful and very welcoming. Georgia is very similar to my hometown (Toowoomba) in Australia—the people are warm, and the culture is family-oriented. The downside is that Georgia has such great food and terrific cooks that staying on my nutrition program is a challenge!

I am training on the local roads in Gwinnett County, and I believe that I have found some of the best training roads in the country here. The smaller roads are as well maintained as the major roads, thus making training safer. With the North Georgia Mountains literally a stone’s throw away I have an ideal place to train year-round and a great place to live."

So, we can extrapolate that he is living somewhere in Gwinnett. Has anyone see him? GTC riders? Anyone? Nathan joins such pros that call Georgia home such as as Cesar Grajales & other Jittery Joes riders, Chris Pic, Tina Pic, Tim Henry, and Saul Raisin. If anyone knows how to get ahold of him, email me; I'd like the opportunity to interview him.

Winter Bike League It's almost time for the Winter Bike League. The "other" racing season happens in Athens every year. CEO Carney has asked that everyone doing the the WBL to read the rules on what is going to happen and what's expected. Most importantly, helmets are mandatory, and the yellow line rule will be enforced. Read the Rules. (Word Document) Rumors are already flying that the Brothers Hincapie will be at the Toccoa World Cup.

Clark Howard Everyone's favorite consumer advocate, Clark Howard, gave his nod of approval to Rails To Trails on his Monday show. (Now, why can't WBS put Clark Howard back on from 2-6 pm instead of 1-4?).

11-10-2003 Dallas Cyclocross Race The double weekend at Paulding Meadows in Dallas, GA was fantastic. Both races were first rate! Look for more tomorrow.

Tour De Georgia in Trouble? Bike.com  reports that the Tour De Georgia may not happen after Dodge limits its roll in the 2004 event. "Tour de Georgia (April 20-25) The only stage race to garner a Category 2.1 rating on the NRC is back on the schedule in 2004. However, whether or not it will actually take place again is not a 100% certainty, as there have been some behind-the-scenes changes that may adversely affect the race. Though there has been no official announcement about it, there appears to have been a ‘changing of the guard’ in regards to the race’s promotion: former Tour DuPont’er and ’03 Tour de Georgia Director of Operations Chris Aronhalt is now listed by USA Cycling as the race promoter,
and Threshold Sports- which ran the race in ‘03- pointedly left the Tour de Georgia off its list of events for next year. Aronhalt’s background with America’s biggest-ever stage race, along with the involvement of several other former Medalist Sports employees, should bode well for the Tour de Georgia’s return; however, it should also be noted that Aronhalt was the Executive Director of 2001’s ill-fated South Carolina Heritage Tour. And then there’s the matter of the title sponsorship. The 2003 event was title sponsored by Dodge Trucks, but a member of the race staff who wishes to remain anonymous noted that, with the cancellation of plans for a Dodge production plant in Georgia, Dodge is likely to limit its involvement in next year’s race. That would seem to be borne out by the fact that the race is no longer referred to as the ‘Dodge Tour de Georgia’. So, until there is some official word of the Tour de Georgia’s plans for ’04, there will continue to be some low-level uncertainty surrounding it. "

11-12-2003 Custom Bikes On the way back from a trip to Tanasi today, we stopped off at Cartecay Bikes in Ellijay. They are now selling "Palemari" bikes, which are made by Carl Strong. Strong bikes are some of the nicest customs I've ever seen; they are very popular on the west coast. Other shops in Atlanta which carry custom bikes are: Boneshakers in Powder Springs (Kelly, Moots), Freeflite (IF), Atlanta Pro Bikes (Independent Fabrications), and Bicycle Link (Serotta).

Brush Creek There is a new trail at the Tanasi trail system near the Ocoee Whitewater Center in Ducktown, TN. Brush Creek is a 7 mile trail located about 3 miles from the Whitewater Center. Starting from the "cell tower" parking lot by Boyd Gap, it is mostly down hill with a few rolling sections. It is pretty smooth with a few rock gardens. The trail was built with a trail building machine by the US Forest Service in conjunction with the Chattanooga Bike Club and SORBA. It was a fun trail and would make a great ending to a long day of riding or a great place to take a beginner or intermediate rider. Plans eventually call for this trail to connect in with the main Tanasi system either by road or trail; I can't remember which.

Patrick Jones Thanks to a member of the APB team that pointed out that Patrick Jones (APB) is currently sixth in the nation right now in the NORBA National standings in the Expert Master Men 30-39 Category. Go Patrick!

11-18-2003 You Never Know What You Will See! Last night I was out on the Comet doing my recovery ride when I heard on 99x that the Mrs. Winners chicken place on ****** Rd.. was on fire. As I was about finished with my ride, I decided to head on over. There were half a dozen fire trucks including the ladder truck out. The back half of the restaurant was engulfed in smoke. Traffic was backed up for about a mile in either direction. I was able to hop through on the opposite side of the street on the sidewalk. I stopped and watched for a few minutes. Too bad I didn't have my camera on me. This ranks as one of the interesting things I've seen on a ride. The most interesting was a plane crash at Chicopee Woods while mountain biking a few years ago and the camera men from local news channels traipsing through the woods trying to find it. They never did b/c it was on the opposite side of the Elachee Nature Center from where we were.

Coaching Seminar Tuesday night I attended the coaching seminar at Free Flite in Buckhead with Rick Crawford. Rick is the coach of riders such as Tom Danielson and Chann Mcrae. Rick talked about the importance of keeping your central nervous system happy and keeping your life in balance for those that do more than ride their bike for a living. I'm expecting a write up about this from one of his coaching firm's athletes.

Park Work Stands Park has released a new consumer workstand called the PCS-9. Priced at about $100, this workstand has a wingnut instead of a quick release to put the bike in the stand, but it's easy to operate. Boneshakers in Powder Springs has several in stock.

11-21-2003 Events this Weekend Looking for something to do this weekend? Come on down to the Cyclocross State Championships at the Dauset Nature Center. The Airport ride is in full swing on Sundays at 10 am starting from the Pier One/Georgia Grill shopping center. Remember not to park in their parking lot or you car might be towed. Parking is available on the side streets or at East Rivers Elementary School. Saturday the WBL will have an unofficial ride at Sunshine Cycles - 10 a.m. in Athens. Want to do something different? Try the Drinking Club with a Mountain Biking Problem. The Wheelhopper has will meet this Sunday for riding and beer (you must be 21 to drink).

Just In Canada Dave will be leading the WBL Unofficial Ride this Saturday!

You Need More Photos! Ok, someone told me I need more photos. Why don't have I them? Ummmm....I don't have a digital camera. My house is a money pit, and some purchases had to be put off this year (Washers break, the entire electrical system in my house decides to die one day, etc., etc.) Sometimes there can be a few weeks in between taking the photos and getting them online. I have to use up the whole roll of film, get them developed, scan them in, crop them, and finally post them. If you want to see more photos, please submit them. I know there are at least a dozen people at the cross races with cameras. Email the photos to me! I have an address that can accept large attachments, so email me and I will give you the address to send photos to.

11-24-2003 Winter Fashion Tips and Observations (with special thanks to the guys at Roadbikereview.com that helped me with these)

1. Knee warmers and leg warmers are meant to be worn under your shorts. Arm warmers are supposed to be put under the jersey sleeves.
2. Booties and Gortex Socks keep feet toasty. The same for windproof gloves for hands.
3. Don't worry, everyone looks like the Michelin Man too.
4. Be visible at night. Wear light colored clothing. Use lights.
5. Layer!
6. Warm your Heart Rate Monitor strap before putting it on. Keep your shoes and shorts in a warm place.
7. If you realize you forgot to put on your HRM chest strap after getting 3 layers on, forget about it. It's not THAT important.
8. Use the bathroom BEFORE getting dressed.
9. Pay attention to the order you put the clothes on. Start with your feet and work your way up and out. Socks first, shorts and tights, then upper layers. Hat and helmet, then gloves. You can't tighten shoes or clip your helmet strap with 2 layers on your hands. One exception: Shoes. Leave those for later because you will be walking around the house trying to find all this crap.
10. Dress to be cold for at least the first ten minutes. You will warm up. If you don't warm up, then you dressed wrong. Have fun freezing your butt off.
11. Merino wool turtlenecks (and socks). Soft, they wick, they don't get smelly.

2004 Races I've had a lot of questions lately about the 2004 racing schedules. Check the 2004 Calendar for updates. I post them soon after I get them. If they aren't there, then I don't have them. From what I hear, the GAP schedule may be changing quite a bit. Road schedules tend not to change too much. Use the 2003 schedule to approximate the dates for RR's. If you have a question about a specific race or series, get in touch with the promoter. If it isn't on my website then I don't know either! :) Thanks, Trish

Final GAP Standings The final GAP series standings have been posted. Congratulations to all series winners! Series Standings

CX State Finals More later......good day, fantastic non-cyclcross weather. Congrats to the state champions!

SE Cycling Updates With Thanksgiving week here, I will try to get an update or two up. Things have been complicated by an accident after Sunday's CX race. I was broadsided by another car off of I-75. My poor little Civic will most likely be totaled by the insurance company. It isn't drivable. I was injured and probably won't be riding for a little while (I'll be back on by CX Nationals, though!!). I'll try to get an update or two this week, so if you have photos from the CX races this weekend, email them to me. I have some and will scan them in as soon as I can get a car and get them developed.

11-25-2003 Car Update My car is in the shop for repair, and I have a rental. Yeah! I'm sore as could be and will be off the bike for a while per doctor's instructions. Hopefully, I will be back before the next two cyclocross races. Meanwhile, I'm going to practice my horizontal lounging skills and hand-eye coordination drills (laying on the couch with the tv remote control) to get a start on the off season.

Cyclist Hit in Newnan From the Newnan Times-Herald Bicyclist struck head-on, listed as 'critical'
Published 11/21/03, By CAMERON JOHNSON, A Coweta County bicyclist was hit head-on by a Newnan woman driving a Toyota 4Runner Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Sewell Mill Road and Walt Carmichael Road. Cyclist Sven Olson was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center, where Thursday night he was in critical condition, according to a hospital spokesman. Olson was hit head-on as he was making a right turn onto Sewell Mill Road, from Walt Carmicahel Road. Dawn Copeland turned left through his lane from Sewell Mill Road, according to Deputy Glenn Hand, of the Coweta County Sheriff's Office. Copeland was heading west, so the sun definitely played a factor in the 3:51 p.m. wreck, but speed did not, according to the deputy. Olson was rushed by helicopter ambulance to Atlanta, and the landing zone was set up at Highway 70 and Walt Carmichael Road. Thursday night it was unknown what charges might be pending in the wreck.

Atlantan Doug Pomerantz finished an fantastic 29th in 4:19, only 6 minutes behind the winners. Cycleworks rider Kerry Millar finished in 5:19. Kerry said that the wind blew 20-30 mph all day. 11-28-2003 Post Turkey News Now that we are all stuffed and feeling guilty about eating too much (the entire Ghiradelli Chocolate Caramel bar might have been a bit much on my part), on with the news!

Georgia CX World Wide Coverage Hey Georgia Crossers, we made cyclingnews.com!

Chance Speaks Chance Regina, marketing manager at Maxxis Tires, recently spoke to Velonews.com about rumors regarding a merger of the Maxxis and Giant mountain bike teams. Chance said: "We are still trying to put it to bed. A team of this size is really tough to get the arms around. Tons of sponsors jumping on board and we are trying to finalize the cross-country roster." Many Atlantans know Chance better as the team manager of the Cycleworks Team.

Ryder Hanging Up His MTB Wheels? A small reference on cyclingnews.com has Ryder Hejedal (Gary Fisher-Subaru) joining US Postal for 2004. As a huge Ryder fan, I don't want to see him forsake the dirt. "US Postal adds young talent The US Postal-Berry Floor cycling team will add several young riders to its roster for 2004, according to an article on the team's website. As well as the previously-announced addition of top US under-23 rider Patrick McCarthy, Belgians Jurgen Vandenbroeck (20), and Stijn Devolder (25), Spaniard Benjamin Noval, and Canadian Ryder Hesjedal - better known as a mountain bike racer - will all join the team. One further young rider is also scheduled to climb aboard Postal's big blue bus, a Colombian who directeur sportif Johan Bruyneel declined to name, but who is reported by cycling4all.com to be Daniel Rincon Quintana"

12-1-2003 New Rail Trail in Beaufort? A 26 mile stretch of railroad tracks was officially abandoned Nov. 26th after the final train passed through a corridor from Port Royal, SC to Yemassee. Local politicians hope to turn the abandoned tracks into a rail trail similar to ones already in the area. Read Story.

12-2-2003 New Middle GA Bike Maps The Middle Georgia Bike Maps have been updated by their author. Updated maps include Ocmulgee and Arrowhead Park.

12-3-2003 Slow Week It's getting to be winter, which will make for slower news (no news??).

WBL Starts Saturday! For those that aren't racing Cross, the start of the "Other" racing season begins on Saturday in Athens. The WBL will host the second annual Dave Martin Classic. The start will be at 10 am at Sunshine Bicycles in Athens, GA. Trish's reminder: These are RACE TRAINING rides and are NOT for the casual or occasional rider. There is no ride leader, there are no maps. Expect to be drop. Stop the smack talking and get on with the ride!

Cyclocross There are also two cyclocross races this weekend in Covington and Monroe. Promoter Andy Johnston says that the flier's start times are correct for Sunday's Monroe race. Women and Cat. C race at l1:00, and Cat.  D/Juniors race at 11:50. Group B will be at 10 am, and Group A at 12:30. Contrary to the flier, ladies' entry fee is only $12. Riders are also excited about Lake Verner, a new venue for the cross series.

12-4-2003 Heras to Leave Postal If you have been living in a hole and haven't heard, Roberto Heras is leaving US Postal. He will be joining the Spanish team Liberty Seguros. Velonews.com coverage.

12-5-2003 Could Bike Lanes Be Coming To South Cobb Dr.? In an article from the Marietta Daily Journal: "The City Council unanimously approved a resolution supporting Cobb County's request to the Atlanta Regional Commission to make South Cobb Drive a six-lane roadway with a bike path and 20-foot landscaped median from Bankhead Highway to Cobb Parkway. During his mayoral campaign, Dunaway promised to make South Cobb a safer thoroughfare from Lockheed Martin to Cobb Parkway.
"It's not a safe road," he said. "There is no divided median. It has a very high accident rate." However, both road proposals approved by council are tentative, pending approval from the ARC."

I find this statement a little confusing because South Cobb Dr. never crosses Bankhead Highway. It crosses underneath Cobb Parkway near where Hwy 280 (aka South Cobb Dr.) becomes Delk Road near Dobbins Air Reserve Base. Knowing that part of town very well, South Cobb Drive is very safe in the Smyrna area unless they are talking about doing this to South Cobb Dr. closer to Marietta, which gets more traffic than the Smyna end.

Thanks to the Covington CX Crew!  Thanks to Shey and Kari Linder and Nancy and Adam Jones for putting on a fun CX race today at Lake Varner in Covington. The views over the lake provided a beautiful backdrop to hold the coldest cyclocross race of the year so far. With temperatures in the 40's and windchills in the 30's riders huddled up until the last minute trying to stay warm. The course was about 1.1 miles over grass and included a long asphalt section, a big hill, and some off camber. Some of today's winners were: Lisa Randall (Women-Alan Factory Team), Tony Scott (Genesis-Masters 30+), and Jed Schneider (Cat. A Men-Alan Factory Team).

Accident Update Well, it's official, I've torn some muscles in my lower back. It made the race today very painful for me. About half way through, I had to sit up and spin easy for 2 laps. I was never able to put any real power to the pedals. On the sections that I should have been able to sit and push in the big ring, I had to stand and let my knees absorb the bumps. My back was in agony. It will be interesting to how my back holds up. The Cyclocross National Championship is in Portland, OR next weekend. (Oh, if the hotel has a computer, there may be some updates on the forum at http://www.georgia-cross.com from the Southeastern Cycling crew on how the Georgia riders are doing.)

On another note, the insurance company totaled my car, so I will be without wheels when I have to relinquish the rental car. I'm looking for a Honda CRV preferably 4 wheel drive. If you have one for sale or are a car salesman/woman, drop me a line

Monroe CX Sunday was another fantastic day for cyclocross in Monroe, GA. Mother Nature warmed up temperatures about 10 degrees. The course was a mix of asphalt, grass, and gravel with 5 dismounts. My race went much better! I've been doing a lot of high cadence spinning, which is the best way for me to go fast without putting strain on my back. I decided that I tried to push too big of a gear on Saturday. I mostly stayed in my small ring except for on the asphalt and spun upwards of 100 rpm on some parts of the course. My back held out until the final lap, when it gave out on the ditch jump.

Travel Girl Team Announced FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Contact: Kim Sawyer

Atlanta, Georgia, December 8, 2003 -- Roswell Velo is pleased to announce its 2004 women's team roster and sponsors. Racing for the past two years as the Nalley Automotive Group team, next year's squad will be title-sponsored by Travel Girl magazine, a new Atlanta-based travel magazine geared towards women on the go. After racing a chiefly regional calendar in past seasons, the Travel Girl team will be expanding its 2004 schedule to include additional National Race Calendar events. The team also hopes to send representatives to the U.S. Masters National Cycling Championships as well as to the Canadian Cycling Championships.

Returning from last season are 2003 U.S. Masters Nationals podium-finisher Marianne Holt, 2003 Ecology Center Classic Criterium winner Deborah Borden (CAN), road and track racer Amy Spruill and top regional rider Kim Sawyer. This group is joined by Alabama-resident Rebecca Falls, former Genesis Scuba all-arounder Jenn Cooper Green, Canadian Tracey Grimshaw and former Sobe-Cannondale pro mountain biker Karen Masson (AUS).

2004 women's team sponsors include Travel Girl magazine (travelgirlinc.com), A. G. Edwards , Nalley Lexus, Roswell Bicycles, Cannondale, Shimano, Bell, Maxxis, massage therapist Leigh Pouncey, and Colby Designs.

Travel Girl's U.S.C.F. club, Roswell Velo, also fields a club-level and Elite Men's team co-sponsored by A. G. Edwards, a nation-wide full-service brokerage firm and Nalley Lexus, a metro Atlanta car dealership. For 2004, the Nalley Lexus/A. G. Edwards Elite Men's team has entered into a partnership with Division III team Jittery Joes to supply it with up-and-coming espoir talent as needed.

Roswell Velo is also the organizer and promoter of the Nalley Historic Roswell Criterium (nalleyhrc.com), an NRC event in its third year.

For more information on the Travel Girl team, please contact Kim Sawyer at kimberly_c_sawyer@yahoo.com.

Trish's note: This is great news for women's cycling in Atlanta. There are several teams with strong women's contingents for 2004. Of course, the powerhouse is Genesis, but Travel Girl has the potential to give them a run for their money in local events. RBM and Boneshakers also have strong women's teams this year. Congratulations to Kim and crew on the formation of their new team!

Good Luck at CX Nationals! Good luck to the riders going to the Cyclocross National Championships in Portland, OR this weekend: Lisa Randall (Elite Women-Alan Factory Team), Trish Albert (Amateur Women-Team Peggy/Boneshakers), Tony Scott (Masters-Genesis), and Scott Ewing (Masters-RBM)! We are expecting perfect cross weathers--highs in the 40's and rain all weekend. Expect full reports and photos next week.

12-15-2003 Cyclocross National Championships  I JUST got in from a 12 hour travel day from Portland, OR. I will have a full report for all Georgia races and photos sometime by the end of the week (??). For short: it was cold, rainy, and very Belgian like. There was a beer tent and lots of hot beverages. We need a beer sponsor for the Georgia Series!

Quick Results:

Masters 30-34 Men: The Blade aka Tony Scott (Genesis) overcame a flat less than two minutes into the race to place 25th of 77!! I predict that Tony will medal in 2004.

Elite Men: Jed Schneider (Alan Factory Team) was 21st of over 160 starters!! (ok, Jed's an adopted Georgian). He was one of the few that 2x National Champ Johnathan Page did NOT lap!! He looked so strong. Watch for him in the Top 10 next year.

Elite Women: Lisa Randall (Alan Factory Team) battled mud in her eyes--literally--to place 27th in her first Elite Nationals. She kept passing and passing people after someone held her up on the starting line. She looked super strong the whole race!

Women's C: I got 2nd in Women's C and was about 30 seconds behind the winner. I couldn't believe it. I now know I belong in the B's :) I got a nice bottle of Oregon wine for my efforts. Other prizes included other locally brewed frosty adult beverages. (YUM!)

Master 45-49 Men: Scott Ewing (RBM) got 31st of 45! (he raced before we arrived, so I don't have details)

Other Southern Results:
Andy Applegate (NC) got 2nd in Master Men 35-39. Ryan "Tree Farm" Trebon (NC) was 3rd in Elite Nationals.

More later...sleep now.

As always, full results on Cyclingnews.com:

NARC is Back! The North Atlanta Racing Club (NARC) will be an open membership club in 2004. Applications are now being accepted, and the race team is forming. From NARC: "The North Atlanta Riding Club (NARC) is back in the big ring for the 2004 cycling season. Free-Flite Bicycles has been a proud sponsor of this 20-year old cycling club for most of the club's life, and in 2004 Free-Flite Bicycles
will be there again. NARC is well known in the Atlanta area for its sponsorship of many of the area's most talented road racers. This year the club has been reborn as an open cycling club for all those that love to ride their bicycles. By open, this means that you don't have to have an "in" with someone or be a big-time racer to belong to NARC. All it takes is an interest in and love of cycling -- NARC membership is open to all.  During the upcoming season, NARC will host fun rides, training rides for those that want to compete, and mountain bike rides for the off-road enthusiasts. There may even be some opportunities and action on the southeast's only cycling track --the Dick Lane Velodrome in East Point! An organizational meeting was held the first week of December at the Five Seasons Brewing Company in Sandy Springs, and a large crowd of 70 cyclists showed up in support of the new club format. Dan Thornton, President of Free-Flite Bicycles, opened the meeting by welcoming the group and reviewed for the group the long history of NARC and Free-Flite Bicycles'past involvement as a longtime sponsor. The new club president, John
Millsaps, discussed NARC club benefits, cost of membership ($50 which includes a great Castelli-brand team jersey), and the NARC mission statement. Ray Miller, the club's Vice President, presented
the structure and benefits of the club sponsorship program. The club's Secretary is Judy Galvin was unable to make the meeting. Mike Barman, a manager at Free-Flite Bicycles Buckhead, gave a brief
description of each of the NARC Board Member responsibilities. Brent Graves, the GM for Free-Flite Bicycles reviewed the communication channels for the NARC. He also presented the benefits and requirements of the club's racing team program. Joann Powell, the club's Ride Director, is planning on having a full calendar of social rides, training rides and NARC social later in the year."

Trish's note: There are not many open cycling clubs and teams in Atlanta. This may be a good time to get on a team if you are not signed yet! The NARC guys are a lot of fun!

12-17-2003 WBL The Royston Classic has been rescheduled for this Saturday. It was cancelled last week because of bad weather. As always, keep an eye out on the WBL web page for updates on rides if the weather is questionable.

The End of the 24 Hours of Adrenalin?  "Trilife Sports International, who produces the 24 Hours of Adrenalin offroad series across North America has filed for bankruptcy, we have learned. On December 3rd, in Toronto, the company filed a Statement of Affairs detailing assets of $78,740 (nearly 60% rolling stock - the trailers and equipment used to produce the events) and total liabilities of $375,774.95. The vast majority of the total deficiency (what is owed), amounting to $297,034.95 is owed to 17 unsecured creditors; a sum of $295,084.95. The largest creditors are two American law firms and a Toronto-based video production company, who are owed approximately 55% of the total unsecured debt. There is only one listing of an event venue in the unsecured creditors list, for a relatively modest $1200. The 24 Hours of Adrenalin website has a front page up stating "Our site is down while we are building a new system. Our target live date for the new site is mid December 2003. We apologise for any inconvenience."  The first creditor's meeting is scheduled for December 22nd in Toronto."

Velodrome Update "Just wanted to update everyone about the going ons of the Dick Lane Velodrome. First, The public works department has sent out our engineering report for evaluation. We need to have the public works department sign off on the engineering report before our proposal goes to the city council for a vote. We have successfully negotiated the lease with the city attorney so hopefully the vote will go our way. Then the race begins to raise the money to fix the track so we can start training and racing in 2004. By the way you can still make your tax-deductible contribution for 2003!!!!! Second, we have had some interest in sponsoring a four race series in 2004. We have put together a great looking proposal and perhaps we can have some sponsorship before we finish fixing the track. A Big thanks goes to Bill Thompson, Steve Foley, Brian Sullivan, John Kelly, Mike Barman, Rynn Pumpian, Rick Alembic, Wayne Whitesides and Lisa Safstrom for their help! Third, the more money we have raised the stronger our position with the city council so please send in your Tax Deductible Donation for 2003."

Thanks CW and OB guys I have to give a quick shout out to Pete, Brian, Brad, Joe, and Ralph for hanging with me the last few weeks on the Airport ride. It's been fun! Of course, we just finished our race season a few weeks ago and aren't quite as eager to go all out as some other people! :)

12-30-2003 Georgia House Resolution to Promote Bike Lanes Georgia House Resolution 265 was written to promote bicycle lanes on Georgia's roads. Bicycles are a legal and legitimate form of transportation, and this resolution affirms that. From the Georgia Bicycle Advocacy mailing list: "The Resolution was introduced in 2002 by Representative Don Wix, from south Cobb County and a frequent bicyclist often seen on the Silver Comet Rail-Trail. Bicycle advocates spoke with Representative Wix in February of this year during ABC/SBL's annual "Bicycle Morning At The Capital." Among other things, they asked about tweaking the Resolution (which he did). A call was sent out in March for cyclists across the state to contact their Representatives asking them to support the Resolution. It ended up passing this year. In summary, the Resolution passed in 2003."

Cleaning out for 2004 I've begun cleaning house a little bit for 2004. All of the 2003 stories have been moved to the 2003 Archives
